So much new information over the last few hours, and there seems already be conflicting information .. and the new information leads to many new questions; none of which could really be answered until the new gym system goes live (once a new app version is released and it is forced).

Based on the raid screenshot (sharing a home with the Nearby/Sightings list), it looks like one could potentially choose which raid you wish to battle in, based on the boss Pokemon that features. With the ability to capture the boss Pokemon after a battle, it hopefully means that you can go after rares, maybe regionals and maybe legendaries ..

From home I can see two additional gyms, and from work I can see three additional gyms.
When things go live again, the race will begin to be the first to claim the spot for my team and see how the new mechanics work.

That’s interesting:

4 new items that can only be unlocked by participating in Raids: Golden Razz Berry, Fast TM, Charged TM, and Rare Candy.

So I will be able to keep my high IV mon with the poor moveset and use the TMs to switchout to my STAB move of choice – excellent move Niantic.

When you collect items at Gyms, there is a greater likelihood to find items that aid in battle - like Potions and Revives. As recognition for your team’s effort, you’ll earn bonus items and more XP when visiting Gyms controlled by your team.  – ok good to know. I wonder if 10Km eggs or incubators could be among the bonus items.

Clarification: only one Pokémon of a single species can be assigned to a Gym at one time – so it’s the species not type they are limiting. And in a twist: To help balance different Pokémon strengths and abilities, stronger Pokémon generally lose motivation more quickly than those that are not as strong. So it's possible we'll see a new set of Gym regulars replace the current Big 7.

Clarification 2: When battling Pokémon, you battle Pokémon in the order they were assigned to the Gym; the Pokémon on the Gym for the longest time will battle first. So I was wrong before  - now it’s potentially first on first off - hmmm

To increase a Pokémon’s motivation, you can give any kind of Berry to any Pokémon on Gyms controlled by your team. All Berries provide the same increase in motivation with the exception of the Golden Razz Berry, which fully restores motivation - This will be a test of players’ altruism – nobody likes freeloaders but if it will help your team retain control….and looks like you’ll earn Stardust and XP for giving Berries to Pokémon defending Gyms. What’s not clear from the description is whether you actually have to be one of the 6 defenders in order to feed berries?

Wow, even more news today

New app version is out that adds in all the required stuff for gyms to function, though it looks like raid events are scheduled to be turned on later (after a beta test somewhere?)
and finally the ability to search your Pokemon storage, including by CP and type (this was needed so badly back when pretesting was a thing)

With Pokemon Trainer Club issues, the Fire/Ice event was extended a further day (now ending 1pm PST 21/6 - around 8am 22/6 New Zealand); which means another walk at lunch time with more lucky eggs running to see how much more XP I can gather)

Last night my buddy image disappeared from the front screen - when I restart the app it comes back for about 30 seconds and then vanishes.
Sadly has persisted through the new app version as well.

As I've mentioned probably several times now, I have been trying to reduce the number of Pokemon I have in my storage; all the updates is making it slightly harder to decide what to do as its probable that Pokemon in the CP1700-2500 will now be valuable gym defenders, while the previous CP champions will relegated to attackers only (due to how high CP Pokemon will loose motivation faster)

With type effectiveness also playing a bigger part, I may need to actually choose my attackers rather than relying on the preselected Pokemon

I think I have decided that evolutions that take 125 candy - keep 3, evolutions that take 50 candy - keep 2/3, with a non evolved form sitting in reserve in case another evolution is required.

I can also see that some of the Pokemon that may not have received a Level Up in my last round will need to be treated to this program..

So who has been playing since the new gyms went live?

On Friday (the day they went live), I was ready to give up.
Attacking a gym needed 6 pass throughs to defeat one Pokemon, and the reward of 1 coin per hour defending was a joke.

Thankfully on Saturday things changed and the reward for defending was changed to 1 coin for 10 minutes (though the daily coin cap was reduced to 50 coins) and battling got easy (a full CP/motivation Pokemon will take 3 battles to defeat, regardless of the starting CP of the Pokemon)

Gym bugs however has got worse, HP/charge move bars go up and down without warning and the death loop bug is still there

New system of only getting coins when a Pokemon is removed from a gym does not reward staying in a gym for a long time - I want my Pokemon to be battled and to loose!!

Raids are fun, being able to get some harder to find or 3 Evolution Pokemon without spending all the candy is awesome, however as a solo player I know I can't do a Level  3/4 raid by myself (espy with the gym battle bugs) and there is no way to tell if anyone is around to help you in a raid before you spend your free pass.

Yesterday was not a good day for gyms - started with a pokemon returning after 2 days in a gym with 50 coins, but then 5 others returned in the late evening with nothing to show for their efforts at defending gyms for more than 2 days.

Today, I have resorted to leaving rats and pigeons as there is no way to ensure that the last 2 long stay defenders will return with coins.

I'm starting to think that 50c a day is not worth the effort - increasing bag space is going to have to wait until the novelty of 1-2 player raids wears out. Rewards for taking down gyms are not attractive, in fact it just helps the opposition collect their coins. This is leading to a new type of gym stagnation.

The rate of decay for pokemon in gyms is inconsistent, need more understanding on this.

What are the best pokemon to put into gyms if you can hold the gym for x number of hours?

I think every area is going to be different depending on what your local activity is like. If there's a high turn-over of gyms then you'll want to put in something stronger so that it lasts for a couple of hours. But if you're in an area with low turn-over then it's probably ok to put in trash pokemon.

50 coins a day would be nice.  I'm getting none, no matter how many hours I've been on a gym.
Got back a 3 day defender.  No coins.
Waste of time defending gyms and no way to earn coins.

The only way to earn coins is to defend gyms and coins are earned at the rate of 1 coin per 10 minutes. I found that when a defender returns, the notification will let you know how many coins (if any) have been earned - but if you look at the coin balance in the shop, the most recent earnings are not reflected. I've had to restart the app for it to update the coin balance. If you have already received 50 coins for the day, then no earnings are reflected in the return message.

If you are not seeing any movement in your coin balance, then you should follow up with Niantic support.

Already seeing massive stagnation around the local gyms; last few mornings I have gone out and taken over a few gyms expecting to be kicked out pretty quickly (which is good - I get my coins)
Still there after work ... and then still there the next morning. My team mates aren't coming to the gym either - its me (yellow) against a swarm of red.

While I love the new gym diversity and can get behind the motivation concept, what is starting to really annoy is that CP no longer matters at all when you are in a gym.
At full motivation it takes three battles to faint an enemy Pokemon; at about 50% motivation it takes two battles and at 0% motivation it takes one battle
When you are using a CP3000 Pokemon against a fully motivated CP100 Pidgey, it should only take one battle (not three) - yes the battles are quick, but they still take time and more battles = more bugs

Previously, gyms were taken down in part to prevent the opposition from benefiting from coins. Now the gyms are left untouched for the same reason.

The Blissey that I put into a gym last Friday morning (a few minutes after the gyms became active) has only returned this morning - a 6 day stay. Fortunately, it was the first to return, so came with 50 coins.

I certainly hope that another adjustment to the gym mechanics is on the way soon.

I must have lost my notifications for this post - just realised how much I've missed since I was last here! I loved the Fire & Ice event, although it decimated my Pokeball supplies (of every variety). I ended up with about 600 Cyndaquil candy - they were popping up all over my front lawn like weeds. Got some nice Typhlosions, Houndooms, a great Piloswine, a Cloyster or two... very happy!

Since the gym rework, I've chucked out a few low or mid-range Pokemon that were intended for prestiging gyms, but I'm still waiting to bite the bullet and do a full-scale cull. I don't feel like I know the new system well enough to start chucking everything away yet. I've actually done better, coin-wise, since the change. Before, I could barely ever get into gyms and when I did, I was kicked out before I could get in another. That meant I'd collect my defender bonus as soon as I got one Pokemon in a gym, making my daily cap effectively 10 coins. Now it's easier to battle gyms down (and you almost feel like you're doing people a favour by sending their Pokemon back to them) and you only need 1 Pokemon to stay in overnight to get your full payout. I don't think the new system is perfect by any means, but it's nice to see all sorts of crazy things in gyms and to battle against a different variety of Pokemon.

I've done about 15 raids and caught a fabulous Tyranitar. I also used a TM on my only other one to give it a much better moveset. I've used other TMs on my Steel Wing/Hurricane Dragonite to give him Dragon Tail and my Karate Chop/Submission Machamp to give him Dynamic Punch. But the very first one I used was on my Ampharos. I walked that darn Mareep 260km and got Charge Beam/Focus Blast, so I had no hesitation in changing him to Zap Cannon. All that walking was no longer wasted. He got his first outing against a Lapras raid boss this afternoon. I've spent a lot of time looking at my boss counters and their movesets and deciding where to spend my stardust, but I haven't fully committed to maxing anything out yet because I have a feeling that raid bosses will migrate like nests soon, and I may regret using all my stardust on my Machamps, lol.

But maybe the greatest thing ever in the history of the game happened to me yesterday. I logged on after lunch and lo and behold, there was a shiny new Pokestop in my street. My entire subdivision previously had none, and the closest was 1.2km up a ridiculously steep hill. On days where I wasn't planning to go anywhere else that had Pokestops, I'd have to make a special trip in the car just to spin it. I knew that my friend's son, who played Ingress, had submitted the sign at the entrance to an adjacent reserve as a portal several years ago, and it seems it finally made it through the queue at Operation Portal Recon and got approved. I can tell it's taken ages because the new subdivision on the opposite hill, which is a couple of years old, was not there when the photo was taken. I can drift to this new Pokestop if I stand in one corner of my office upstairs. It picks up two existing spawn points, but I believe it may generate a few more after a couple of days. Someone on The Silph Road said they got a new Pokestop at a local park and then the park became a nest at the next nest migration, so who knows, maybe we'll get a nest at the bottom of the street. It's not one currently, but it wasn't properly tagged in OpenStreetMap so I have fixed that, and hopefully the more accurate tagset I've assigned to it is also one that triggers nests in PoGo.

Edited for spelling.

^ Wondering where you have been

Congrats on being able to higher level raids; even though I have a pretty decent range of Level 30 Pokemon, I attempted a Machamp raid solo last weekend and failed time and time again
As a result my daily raid pass is being used on Magikarp, Gen 2 start evolutions and Muk ..
Which as a result, no TM's for me - just many useless revives and the odd rare candy/golden razz berry

Gym stagnation is an issue, even with Pokemon in 12 gyms I haven't received a single coin on some days ..
I've been hoping that by randomly attacking red/blue players that they will retaliate .. but so far that strategy has not yet worked.

Before the gym change over I was pretty certain I was going to get rid of a few Pokemon from my storage .. but now I'm not sure if I have a strategy seeing as there is no strategy when it comes to leaving Pokemon in gyms.

Congrats on the new Pokestop!!

Yeah, the new raid system does make it hard for trainers who don't have access to large groups of other players. It's a shame you're not here on the North Shore - you could join our squad. I bumped into a couple of dudes at my first L4 raid whom I recognised from one of the Auckland PoGo Facebook groups and we formed FB Messenger chat group. Now it has dozens of members so there's usually enough to gather together a raiding party when someone puts out a call for help. I think having some kind of organised group is vital to being able to do the more difficult raids.

17th May to 6th July - added 600k stardust to get back to 2 million

I want to power up some more Pokemon (this time focusing on Gen 2), but with the new meta around gyms and how hard it can be to get stardust, i'm not sure if I should do the upgrades.
(and if I do, do I go all way to Pokemon Level 30 as I have been doing or go to Level 25)

Time to make one of my famous lists and put far too much thought into a mobile game!

Happy first anniversary!
At approx 8.30pm on the 6th July 2016 I downloaded the game to see what my boss was talking about - he is an Ingress player and was in the Pokemon Go Beta
