Gen 3; weather, two new game version updates in the same day

Today has been another big Pokemon Go day .. loving it

So 50 Gen 3 Pokemon arrive "later this week", and app version 0.85.1 has been released with new moves and new store items. The app update also contains a new battle system and the beginnings of battle teams (though not functional yet).

Weather changes in game based on real life are also coming, and it also a) affects what spawns with additional rewards (aka stardust) and b) changes the battle system
Update is not yet live and will probably need a few game updates

I'm expecting the new generation to arrive around lunchtime today, just as Gen 2 did back in February. I'm really excited to see how the new weather system works. Rainy days will be much more fun with potential shiny Magikarp splashing around in the puddles :)

1pm; no changes to my nearby list (ie, silhouettes)

(refreshes TSR, over and over and over again)

Last night while out walking the dogs a 2km egg hatched - a female shiny Pichu emerged. I was very happy to get my second shiny
84% IV - I now have the dilemma - evolve to a shiny Raichu or leave as is.

Oh, cool! No shiny Pikas for me yet. I have two shiny Karp but neither are any good. The 51IV might get evolved if I don't find a better one soon. I have evolved my shiny Shuppet, because it was good IVs and Banette is pretty cool and kind of usable.

I don't think we'll get Gen 3 today, now. Past 5pm over there and they wouldn't want to be sorting out server issues after hours when, the inevitable mass log-in happens. Maybe we'll wake up to it. I think they'd want to do it earlier in the day to have the full team on hand for the first several hours.

I only just noticed Delibird hiding at the base of the tree and the airborne present being tossed out of the left side of it.

...and now it's all live.

Gen 3, weather, free pokemon storage increase, battle parties.

This will draw me back into the game for a bit before I lose interest again.

Seviper and Minun are NZ's first regional mons. They're very common. Minun - possibly due to being normal type and in-game weather being cloudy and rain for the last two days. Seviper - more a night time mon.

When half of the planet gets them, can you really call them regional?

I went out Saturday afternoon and then all of Sunday looking for the new Pokemon - mostly just candy collecting at this stage since I have learnt I need to be patient when it comes to evolving (looking for 91% IVs or better, with the higher the level the better since it will cost less candy/stardust to take higher.

The new weather system is pretty good, though seems to be a tad flawed.
From my observations, the weather changes in game on the hour and is based on the report from accuweather.com

1pm - cloudy
2pm - rain
3pm - cloudy
4pm - rain

In game weather matched the report exactly, while the real world weather has been partly cloudy/cloudy

Yup, definitely using Accuweather - I've been tracking the app against the hourly forecast. Auckland has been hot and sunny with scattered clouds all day. Accuweather's forecast has alternated between cloudy and showers, and the game has followed it exactly. Apparently the Mudkip nest at Unsworth reserve went nuts during the hour it rains, lol. I'm loving the weather boosted CP/IVs. I caught a 694 grade 1 Gulpin this morning that will be getting evolved later tonight.

On Monday; the weather was very accurate to what AccuWeather was reporting (as typed above)

Tuesday however it all went to custard. AccuWeather reported it was cloudy, partly cloudy and sunny between 6am and 2pm (I was really looking forward to sunny between 10am-12noon), but yet in-game it was raining during that entire time. I could not find a single weather report on the internet for the Dunedin area that referenced it raining ...

I asked the question on TSR and someone has replied that it is based on S2 cells.
Using the provided map, it seems as if the S2 cell for Dunedin just covers the city, with the majority of the cell being the Pacific Ocean (while the S2 for my house (15km from Dunedin) is at the edge of a cell that covers most of South Otago/Southland ..). If this is true, do I need to figure out how to use a marine forecast?

Currently have enough candy to fully evolve a Mudkip and Ralts, but without decent specmins to evolve
Walking Slakoth as well (hoping to find more in the wild on these partly cloudy days, but the game is not being nice)
I expect the Fire/Grass starters to be hard to get in Dunedin based on past experience, as well as Seedot

Oh, how annoying! I tracked it for 24 hours (minus the six I was asleep) and it was correct for 16 of the 18 I recorded. Important to note: The in-game weather changes at the top of the hour to what Accuweather's last forecast was for that hour. But, once the hour has started, Accuweather updates their displayed weather to the actual weather, which may not match what they had forecast for that hour. So you can't compare your in-game weather to the app at 15 minutes past the hour as you can no longer see what they were forecasting, only what it actually is now. I had to screenshot what the forecast was at 5 minutes to the hour, then check the in-game weather at 5 minutes past the hour and compare. I love the level of detail - if it says mostly cloudy with a few showers for Auckland, it'll be "cloudy" in-game but also show a sprinkle of rain on the map. Last night Accuweather forecast mostly clear with the chance of showers, which translated to "partly cloudy" with the rain animation. It might be my imagination, but the wind graphics seem to reflect the level of breeziness, too.

Epic weekend of raiding with the Upper Hutt crew.

I think I tallied up 34 raids over the two days and I wasn't the highest.  Mostly Groudon with some Absol, a Ttar and a golem for good measure.
Good XP doing double and triple raid son Lucky Eggs, useful candy and some half decent IV catches along with many things caught on the travels between raids.
We all pretty much figured on making the most of the weekend since Xmas is coming and people disappear on holiday etc.

Hot sunny weather boosted Groudon which was handy.

Niantic has issued a fix for this. Next round of EX Raid invites are for Xmas day and it seems that more people got them this round.

That's ok because Upper Hutt doesn't get EX passes despite the strong area.
Even if I had got one, there's no way I'd have been able to get back for it.  So in a way, quite glad we got skipped again.
Workmates son got one for the Xmas day Palmy one though.  Good luck explaining to a 6 year old pokemon nut that he can't go do it.
