My FIL has an HP Workstation that has 2 x 6 PCI-E Power connectors. He wants a GTX970 which needs/has a 1 x 6 and 1 x 8.

Do I just get an adapter, or are there special requirements?

The 6 plugs into the 8 with 2 empty pins remaining.

I haven't powered it on in that configuration.

Just curious, why a 970 instead of 1060?

Not sure about using a 6 pin PCI-E connector when it needs 8, but I've used molex to 8 pin adaptor in the past without issue.

In theory you just need an adapter, but you should also make sure his PSU can supply the required power.

Thanks. It's 850W so should be ok. HP make some beastly machines! This thing weighs 17KG!
