I finished AC Odyssey, and its DLC's last week, to 100% getting all the trophy's, i have a few (>20) camps etc to complete but its taken me just shy of 190h to do all that.

i did find it repetitive, as a lot of the smaller side missions will pretty much all the same, as were the camps, barracks, caves etc. just copied and pasted again and again.

I only managed to get to level 93, and i dont know how i would get to level 99, as there is just so much XP needed to level up now and there is nothing giving me decent amounts of XP.

None of the characters in AC game are particularly good. I am not sure, honestly, how they could keep anyone interesting in a game as huge as both of those. I finished Black Flag, and if you haven't tried it,  I recommend it. I also finished the Victorian one. It was about the right length. I am not sure how far though I am in Odyssey, but I am very much enjoying the combat. I like "bases" and being able to sneak around and complete those without alerting (same with just cause, batman and Spiderman games), and I am enjoying the other assassin's battles. I could pass on the water-based missions. I likely won't finish it, (and certainly won't be able to 100% it) but it's the kind of game I can play that demands 100% of my attention, which I felt I needed as I feel like I have been working 24/7 for the past 2 months.

I agree there is lots of padding, I am not sure why it doesn't bother me as much as other games. I am still finding side missions "fun".

My problem with the Ubi padding especially is that, in my eyes, they are transparently an attempt to sell you DLCs. In Odyssey, they actually sell you an XP multiplier to get rid of some of the grinding. Jesus, how insulting is that? I don't necessarily mind games that generally out-stay their welcome (provided there's at least a change of scenery and story progress) as much as when the padding, as you say, gets in the way of your progress and, in my case, a full appreciation of the lore. The thing I dislike about open world and overly long games is that they are simply discordant with modern lifestyles -- most of us just don't have the time to dedicate 100 hours to a game and be able to get through the backlog. I'd value a tightly woven 30 hour experience 10 times more than a mediocre 50 - 100hr experience.

I've had to severely limit the games I'll play now, to games over >90% rating or franchises I know I enjoy LOL

I think I am one of the few who didn't enjoy RDD2. It felt like a life simulator, I have one of those, I grind through it enough already LOL.

I hadn't looked at the DLC's the main game of AC:O seems so huge I am not sure I could ever get around to it but that's pretty evil that you can BUY a XP multiplier. :(

For games like Batman and Spiderman, I bought them as I just wanted MORE game.

Holy Mackeral Batman. 190 hours?

How long would you estimate a less but still reasonable playthrough would take?

Sea of Thieves is a fun pirate game, but recommend a decent system to get full experience.

It didn't review very well initially, and is only multiplayer, right?

They have added a lot to it since launch but I still find it a bit directionless tbh

It is multiplayer only but you can do OK on your own, just sucks getting jumped by a full crew sometimes.

Doesn't sound like my cup of tea to be honest. With so many good games out there to play, or finish, games need to be exceptionally compelling to garner attention.

40-70h to play through the main quest with no DLC's

i did everything, all DLC's ,all cultists, all mercenaries, all side quests, all icons on the map. thats why it took so long.

I did all of Origins but I lost my patience with Odyssey.  No fault of the game though, it's truly excellent.  Kassandra is a fantastic protagonist and her voice actor is brilliant.  I just got through the main story, saw another 80hrs in front of me and couldn't face it.  It was around then I jumped into a bunch of shorter games to get some variety.  I often do a big 100+ hr game once a year and then a bunch of drop-in 10-20hrs games after that.

Since not having a real video card, been limited to old school ;)

Sid Miers Pirates (the remake)

Team Fortress 2

Still play Overwatch but without a video card, its a bit messy to look at ;)

Omg I really enjoyed Pirates. If you can find it, get Railroads, that is a FANTASTIC game too.

I used to love Civilization, but for me, it's become way over the top in terms of complexity. I understand some people enjoy that, but for me it just seems like there is too much to keep track of and feels more like a simulator than a game.

I haven't tried 6.

Sid Meier's Railroads is on Steam, $14.99

A quick skim read of the comments, and you'll need to download a exe and do some stuff to prevent it crashing on a Win10 64Bit machine

I find that even universal praise is often no guarantee that one will love a game (I supposed it should be obviously but sometimes it bears repeating). I have found Legend of Zealda: Breath of the Wild to be unbearably tedious with a generally desolate world and in-game characters that are, based on my two goes at the game for around 10 hours combined, flatter and more boring than a piece of paper. I absolutely cannot get the hype at all.

Like you I find that one needs to critically examine your own gaming tastes and then you can identify games that are likely to resonate with you. For myself, I enjoy games where I am in the game world with another character or party and really dislike the "You vs the world/levels" type games (e.g. Dark Souls  or Wolfenstein games). I also enjoy relatively "low brow" games with more straight forward yet coherent stories/settings, with a sensible consistency in difficulty that also bears in mind your need to feel a sense of progression.
