Apparently an Xbox exploded inside a rubbish truck , I did not think they have batteries in them. Never owned one so don't know.

I quote from the well researched story.

A lithium ion battery inside a Xbox console exploded in a recycling truck

There'd possibly be a BIOS battery in them? They are lithium, not sure if they are combustible though?

A controller is part of the console in most peoples eyes... In much the same way many people seem to think a monitor and keyboard is a "computer" or the tower is a "cpu" ;-)

But yeah I don't disagree with you, it sounds like sensationalistic reporting -  Still...  people shouldn't be putting xboxs in their rubbish\recycling bins even without batteries, so the story has that right.

Unrelated to the above story:

Murderer leads police to wife's remains in exchange for an Xbox

I hope the cops gave him one of them exploding ones!

Sadly most e-waste initiatives seem to no londer be in place, the government also decided not to go ahead with any levy on TV's(they were proposing a mandatory supplier recycling scheme which would add $30 to every TV sale which the major brands here agreed to).

Personally I can see why people throw batteries out, most landfills have gate fees(or minimum dump fees) and many local councils only offer battery disposal at the landfill itself. Oh and what does our council do with them? Encases them in concrete and then dumps that, logic being it takes longer to leech into the groundwater but ultimately it will anyway.

The only Li battery is the CR2032 button cell for the bios, just like PC's. No way it 'exploded', if it caught on fire its much more likely it was covered in something flammable and either the PSU or other discharged into it.

Playstation controllers have a Li battery in them but Xbox controllers traditionally use two AA batteries unless you opt for the play and charge batter kit (modular Li pack).

Pretty much exactly what I would guess it was - or one of the similar 3rd party play and charge type kits.

Did someone stuff AA sized Li batteries in a controller?

The Xbox one doesnt even have a CMOS battery, there is no Li battery in the Xbox itself.
An Xbox 360 has a CMOS battery but also no Li components.
