I bit the bullet recently and went from an i5 2500K and 1070gpu to an AMD 5600X and 3070ti. The difference for me is night and day, especially start up and load times - oh and no random crashes and lock ups. All up the new system cost me just under $3,5000 (cpu, gpu, ram, m/b, psu, aio cpu cooler) and I couldn't be happier with it. Been saving for a while hoping that the prices would come down but bit the bullet and did it, just in time for lockdown too, so great timing.

Other option is keep the PC and grab a Series X or PS5?

I've a 6700k with a RTX2060 so it was easier for me to get a PS5 and play stuff across both PC and PS5 than try and invest in a new GPU.

I have both already. It is an option to never game on PC any more, but very occasionally I come across a PC only game I want to play or I might prefer the PC version.

I'm a bit torn and vacillate on this a fair bit as to whether I consider what it costs for a GPU these days to be worth the relatively small amount of gaming I do on it.

I guess one option is find something somewhat more power than my current 1080TI, and just accept I may only be able to hit 60FPS at 1440P on moderate settings if I choose to game on PC.

The rest of the system will be gaming suitable just based on the fact I want/need a very decent spec PC for the other non gaming stuff I do.

Your certainly in a good position at least. I think you'd be better off just looking at a GPU if anything. My upgrade path tends to tick tock between whole guts with keeping the GPU, and then upgrading the GPU on it's own.

Yeah, that's where the conversation started. Just trying to decide what to buy essentially.

There is about $100 difference between a 3070 and 3070TI, probably worth the spend if you are getting to that level on a GPU, the difference between a 3070 and 3080 is about $400

DLSS is the feature that probably most interests me, and the performance (which are linked).

Otherwise, it may have been worth considering a second hand 2080.

If the early indications are worth anything, 12th Gen Intel is likely where I'll head unless there are some beefy discounts available on 5900x though, there doesn't seem to be any room to grow with AMD, until their new platform comes out, which I don't see being able to wait for.

I guess it's just a matter of whether it's worth the i9 over the i7....

Well, reviews are out, I think 12th gen looks pretty good. I was all set for a 12900K, but the 12700K looks very compelling. There isn't huge difference in performance between them in gaming which I don't do much on the PC any more, and for general computing, I am not sure. Having said that, it's $350 more, and over the life of my PC which tends to be 5 years these days, wondering if I should just get the i9 and be done with it?

The 12700K is much more readily available. I was shocked that there weren't more than one chipset of motherboard available at launch, the Z690 seems pretty overkill for me and at $400 minimum that's pretty pricey.

Very torn about DDR5 v DDR4 but DDR5 is pretty much like Unicorn poop to get and doesn't look super compelling from a timings perspective, but I am unsure how that impacts performance vs the considerably larger bandwidth.

Personally I'd wait for the next refresh. DDR5 will be more readily available, more mainboard/chipset options, and also will give software developers the time to optimize & update their software for the new core setup.

But them I am still running an i7-860, guess I've been waiting for a compelling upgrade since then and haven't quite seen one yet. 😄

Make sure you account for the power bill as well!

I am on a 8700K which is doing OK, but it's getting pretty old, and the improvements 8700K to 12700K seem significant from processing speed.

I have been waiting 2 generations already for a decent upgrade. There is always going to be something newer better faster coming and at some point you need to put a stake in the ground.

I went from an i7 2600K to an AMD 5600X, around nine generations of processors. 2600K benchmark is 1740 single thread, 5469 multi. 5600X is 3961 single / 22153 multi. So in theory about double the speed single thread, 4x faster overall. In practice it's a little bit faster day to day, snappy, but it screams through things I do occasionally like video encoding. Given most things are done in a web browser, no real difference, only for the few things that take the power.

A good case with good fans is essential to keep them cool. I don't love the fractal design R5 case. I do really like my Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro CPU cooler, I'd try to get one of their cases next time, and their fans are awesome - better than Noctua IMHO.

Interesting. I have loved my Fractal case, but not sure if I will go that route again, in some ways it will depend on my ability to get my hands on stuff.

Just did a nice build in a Be Quiet Pure Base 500 case. Was extremely impressed with it actually. One of their cheaper cases but still. Great airflow, great expansion, tons of room for cable management.

One thing that really annoys me though is how most of the case manufacturers now seem to have gone with one USB Type-A & one Type-C port on the front. Why only have the one Type-A? The port takes up the whole header on the mainboard anyway so just have two Type-A ports and then the Type-C with it's own header. Can't understand that, and everyone seems to be doing it too.

I’m not sure you’re going to see any meaningful performance improvement between an 8700K and a 12700K for your use cases. With a 3070 or 3070ti you’re still likely GPU bottlenecked at 1440p. You’ll get a few fps but it’ll likely be negligible, particularly with DDR4.
