I've had confirmation that they are coming to NZ -- very limited numbers -- and stores like JB HiFi are doing a lottery system to allocate them. Good luck if you want one.

EB Games NZ had the PlayStation 5 Pro 30th anniversary bundle for pre-order from 10am today. It was limited to Level V members (from what I understand, their top spending 10,000 customers over the last 12 months) which seems like a possible way to help avoid scalpers buying them all up. Unfortunately I'm not Level V myself but I could see pre-orders took around 20 minutes or so to sell out. So hopefully those went to actual gamers :)

JB Hifi are running a ballot via their website, as are Mighty Ape via Facebook (you have to have Primate membership). I prefer how EB have done it to be honest, I'm not a level V but feels less likely to end up in the hands of scalpers than a raffle (especially one requiring you to have paid to enter it).

Basically, Sony have done a terrible job of this.

tbh, I think I'd rather buy either a normal PS5 or PS5 pro when it finally hits the second hand market.

Way too expensive for my blood.

The base disk ps5 regularly goes for around $700 which is still good for what is essentially a 3700x and RX6700. Second hand is even more of a steal if in good condition.

They should have kept to the loss leading tactic, majority of consumers pay via subscription and online store rather than upfront cost.

That went out with the PS4. This cost increase says more about the current market for pc components than Sony. The cost difference is fairly proportional to the current pricing of the components in the PS5 pro.

Seems the pricing and value proposition of the PS5 Pro is not exciting people - most sites in NZ still have stock available for pre-order or click and collect - a far cry from the original launch and not in line with the pre-sale talk.

That said, I have placed my order. Yes it is arguably over-priced, but I love my PS5 gaming and I do enjoy knowing I am getting those extra FPS along with some additional pixels.

Compared over console history, it is definitely an outlier in terms of cost, but there have been similar blips over the years for new hardware when adjusted for inflation.

I want the best experience when gaming in my lounge on the OLED with Atmos surround and am Ok to pay for it.

Out of curiosity, what do we think a similarly specced and capable (in terms of performance across all factors) gaming PC would cost?

The exact specs of ps5 pro are amd 3700x cpu and rx 7700xt gpu (speculated). The base ps5 is rx6700 gpu.

Add 16GB of 3600MHz ram and thats should be it. Although a ryzen 5600 is arguably a better value choice so go with that.

Things get skewed towards PC with newer gen CPU’s and faster memory and/or nvidia GPU with their upscaling so not great for ps5 pro if you wanted a better experience.

Edit: nvidia equiv is last gen 3070/ti

So whilst not directly comparable, an equivalent GPU would cost $900ish alone in NZ right? Add CPU, RAM, 2Tb NVME, Motherboard, PSU, case etc and you would be way over the Pro list price.

Yes, of course you have the added function, flexibility and up-gradability of the PC so it is by no means Apples-to-apples comparison, but adds a little perspective.

I used to build PCs for a hobby but have been out of the game now for many years. How much would it cost to build PC with similar specs as the PS5 Pro using full retail pricing for components?

Building on my reply above and going mostly from the top of my head:

GPU - $800

CPU 3700x equivalent - $400ish?

MoBo - $300

NVME 2TB - $200

16Gb DDR5 - $120

Case, PSU, cooling etc - $200+

...so maybe NZ$2k or so?

Doesn't include OS, cables, sundries...
