Is this correct?

No that is completely wrong, interleaving should be off for lower pings.

If you are a gamer you only want interleaving on where the line/wiring is bad or unstable.  Interleaving is a form of error correction that adds overhead.

Here's what a ping to that gameplanet server looks like with interleaving off:

Tracing route to games11.gameplanet.net.nz [58.28.25.81]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1     1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  192.168.0.1

kiwijunglist:

Thank you for your email regarding interleaving on your account.

Interleaving is currently on, on your account. Turning it off would actually increase your ping, not decrease it. If you would like us to troubleshoot the slow speeds to the COD server, please do a tracert to that server.

You can do this by typing in tracer (ipaddress of the server) e.g. tracert 60.234.1.1 . Email us back the results by right clicking in command prompt and selecting mark and then copy, pasting the results onto email.

I hope this email has been helpful

If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to call us on the number below or email us at support@orcon.net.nz.
Regards

Is this correct?

No, Interleaving is a package verification system which ensures you only recieve non corrupted packages. This means it takes longer as it checks each package and if one is corrupt it will request a resend. while this is quite usefull with LAN's it is totally unnecessary for IP traffic and is the main cause of limited speed in NZ.

i live by the canterbury uni and i find that it depends on the game you play.
during the evenings in my area the net is super slow as all the filty students are downloading Emo music.
But i get a good game speed with cod4 with no visible lagging, even though my ping may be 140 or so.
some thing like Battlefeild 2 i get the same ping but some wicked lag at times.

Your aDSL router line details tells you if interleaving is on or if. You don't have to guess. It usually says 'Fast' or 'Interleaved'

But to extend this topic, the viability of NZ online gaming took a hit with the iminent closure of ICONZ arena. Damn shame really given we don't tend to get EA servers etc here. Australia is has a good deal of servers but lately our link into Aussie is utter crap. Most users find playable pings into Internode servers with our ISPs saying they can't do anything about it. NZ traffic is getting boned across the Aussie circuit (the routing paths being out of NZ ISPs control).

So no Jetstream gaming, no ICONZ gaming...... bvarly any local gaming at all. Personally I think both Xtra and ICONZ have gone down a bad path in cutting out the free gaming costs. It's local traffic so it costs SFA. They could easily restrict IP access to this country only. That would cut out international bandwidth.

Kaos36: I'm getting excellent ping on Teamfortress 2 servers (Aussie & kiwi) 44 ping is the lowest on one of them.

Problem is that game is to fast for me its like everyone is on crack, takes a while for my reactions to catch up lol.

I take it you've never tried playing any of the Quake derivatives then ;)

Been using the aussie COD4 servers for my online hit and find ping is usually around the 80ms mark.

Occasionally get a bit of a freeze but its not too bad, and very playable. Far better than the alternatives.

The force is strong with this one!

Invest in a fibre connection to your house.  Will be expensive but you'll get the pings that you're after Cool

How expensive?

Who installs it?

Has anyone had it done?
