thumbnails for the movies? you sure your looking under the "video" menu on the PS3 and not "music". I've never seen thumbnails for my videos....(using Tversity)
try "triangle" and play from Beginning - worked on a couple of movies i had that just blank screened...

I think he's right, I've got thumbnails for all my movies on PS3 Media server, Vuze transcoder and my standard windows sharing.

I'm thinking there could be something wrong, try setting up a static IP on the playstation and adding it into the DMZ zone in the router, it sounds as though something is blocking it.
Also, what firmware are you upto? If it's 3.00, upgrade to 3.01, as there are a few faults with 3.00....most notable games sometimes freezing

Um upgraded to the latest version as of like 3 days ago. so i guess 3.01.

Ill try to turn off all software firewalls temporarily and give it a shot tonight. Might just be getting blocked by something software.

After this ill try your suggestion. Proccess of elimination I guess. As you say, my seeing the thumbnails of the movies means I should be set up right, with prob 1 small setting stopping the streaming.

But then i remember my ex flatmate had the same issue with his 360 for a while.

I have been using Twonky with NSLU2 Slug and Sata USB external for over a year now and it works like a charm. Only issue I ever had was when I upgraded Twonky (had to go back a build for it to work again).

Thinking of retiring it now though as with a bigger HDD in the PS3 I dont use it as much.

Thumbnails for movies is standard functionality on the PS3. Normally they play the first few seconds of a movie (or you can actually chose the clip to show for each movie individually by selecting one of the in-movie menu options). PS3 Media Server shows those thumbnails.

you'll see i said using TVersity - which doesn't show thumbnails for movies - i know you can have 10secs of "preview" on the PS3 for movies on the PS3 hdd -but that doesn't work for streamed items anyway.
i have since moved from tversity to media server and it is working so much better.. - every movie plays and now i have movie jpgs for the movies :) - only thing i've found is it doesn't let you 'moviesname'.jpg for vobs - folder.jpg works, as i had all my hd vob movies in their own folder it isn't much of a problem, except for a series of movies in the same folder eg Starwars 1-6.

Ah ok cool.

Seems PS3 Media server is the one to go with then. Im still stuggling away with WMP11 but I think Ill just use PS3 MS instead.

Prob much less hassle.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I meant to say 'Unlike TVersity PS3 Media server does allow for 10 second snippets of movies as per the standard functionality of the PS3'.

BAM!!!

Loaded up PS3 media server and with around 20 mins of cursing and fiddling around it was working!!!

Streaming all media with great quality!!

I really should do a write up of this somewhere online and the "help" re: this issue seems sorely lacking.
Imagine the reasonably non tech savvy person trying to do this. Would be a nightmare!!!
