Max Payne 2: The fall of max payne

after completing the game for the first time and listening to the closing credits/music, I realised the game had done something extraordinary. I'd invested emotionally with the actual story. It was as if I was Max Payne and felt his bleakness and loss.  In spite of my epic struggle to find the truth, the joke was on me

Honourable mention: Lords of Midnight (C64)

A blend of war-gamer strategy and epic/RPG that I don't think has been captured by any other game since

see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lords_of_Midnight

Defender of the Crown (C64/Amiga) and Red Storm Rising (C64).

I clearly have a 'take over the island' (DOTC) and 'save the world from communism' (RSR) bent LOL

oh man, you should get a copy of it! if anything I'd say the story telling in it is even stronger than in the sequal, though obviously the graphics is a bit worse...  but hey, we don't care about graphics do we?!

Speaking of which, I've just heard that Max Payne 3 is coming to the 360; PS3 and PC.
