Any other Trekkies manage to get on the open BETA of this? I must say I am very impressed so far (even with the bugs :-))

I am playing...

Finding it a little frustrating at this stage, but I hear it gets better as you increase in level.

I am finding the constant disconnects a real pain, but they are not unexpected given that it is in beta.

I am keen and my partner too (although he's not really into gaming or a gamer-type)... and saw the lifetime subscription for US$239, only available as part of pre-order...

But I'd prefer to trial out the game first before committing to any subscription. I had my WoW on hold for quite some time now.

Yes the Escort Ships are like paper so it gets hard to survive a mission, I have 2 grades to go before I can get something decent

What I'd really love to see for MMORPG is, an accurate/real time-based deduction method.

Say you pay for 100hrs and if you don't play, the time doesn't get eat up. And charges it 10-mins/15-mins block.

Can we please get back onto subject I wanted to hear from people playing Star Trek online, I am sure there is a WOW forum and maybe even one dedicated to discussing MMORPG's in general.

Ive read a few reviews on it, think ill avoid this.

General opinion is that flying around in space is pretty cool, but thats about it. Ive seen the ground combat described as "Ground missions feel like clusterflucks of annoying phaser sounds"

I pre-ordered a copy online yesterday - it's pretty flawed currently (admittedly some of the more glaring bugs are supposed to be fixed with the next beta patch), but I've been enjoying my time in the open beta. Will make for a nice break from WoW.

Have to say i'm loving it, but then i'm also geeking out on it too :)
The beta itself is like every other beta, it has its bugs and lags, but they're stress testing and it's going well.

The game itself is comprised of space combat in a style that's quite like startrek armada, so presented much like an RTS game - this plays pretty well, is very easy (imo) to get the hang of after a few battles and can be quite challenging. (It's my favourite part)

Ground missions are more traditional MMO style with your character being 3rd person and a team composed of yourself and either fellow players or your officer NPCs.

Some ground missions don't involve any combat and just require scanning a set amount of items which adds a nice change of pace.

What's letting it down for me at the moment is they really need to work on how intuitive the UI and the features are, some of the things in the game aren't obvious until you go digging for them. But it's beta, it'll improve.

Plenty of sites still giving away beta keys so may pay to check them out, http://www.startrekonline.com/betacard i believe to see which sites still have keys.

@plas: Course ground combat is gonna be a lot of phaser fire lol it's that or get hit by disruptors and smacked in the face by klingons ;)

@Gigs

Totally agree with all points, I think the scope of the game is huge (and considering they have limited the BETA to Fed and Klingon space leaves alot more to be discovered) I think the fact that they have been developing this game since 2003 shows in the scope of everything possible to the player.

Also dont forget that once out of BETA the PVP element will be more prominant.

I reccomend that thos wanting to get into the BETA should buy from Steam as the package works out to be about $88 NZD which is cheaper than buying it elseware and gets you a BETA key.

I went with D2D, and it came to NZ$70 for the basic version.

Yeah, I signed up for a lifetime account after both closed and open beta. Enjoying it a lot.

It's certainly not as full featured as a game like World of Warcraft, but it's got what I need. At the moment it reminds me of the early days of LOTRO (right down to the Monster Play-ish feel of Klingons) but it's got everything I'm after in an MMO. Cruisers and Engineering Officers are right where I like to be. :)

I've leveled one character to the level cap (an engineering captain in a assault cruiser), and working on a second (tactical captain in an escort) out of a lack of other things to do* (they're still working on the first endgame serious content release). Probably going to cancel my subscription and come back in a few months to see what kind of state the game's in then, which is a pity as the game is kind of fun (albeit in a linear, single-player kind of way).

* - Yes, I could level a Klingon, but I really don't enjoy ship-pvp that much, and ground-pvp was just too repetitive for my liking.
