I have just seen the KiwiLAN website over at http://www.kiwilan.co.nz

It looks like a nice little community utilising VPN to play games.

I am not very experienced in the realm of online gaming but have heard you can have a shocking time in New Zealand.

Unfortunately I am using Telecom's BigTime service for internet access but I like the idea of this service, anyone interested should also check it out. I'll post again once I have some reliable longer term experience with them.

Hi guys,

Yes it's a service I've just recently launched, facilitating gameplay similar to how Hamachi / Garena does. It's "Peer-to-Peer" gaming, so one person hosts, another joins, just like Garena. There are no "active" servers for games running on KiwiLAN (Unless somebody else wants to run one).

It's designed for Kiwis only, I honestly IP-restrict so not even aussies can get in, which generally provides a better overall experience, especially compared to trying to game vs americans which usually lags horribly.

I'm currently getting 6ms ping times to it, and I know somebody else who's got 5ms to it, so it certainly doesn't add much overhead to an internet connection.

Would love to hear the communities feedback on it, games you'd like to see up there, or where you think it could go? I'm thinking some Tournaments once things start to take off! The biggest issue right now is spreading the word, and seeking sponsorship for the hosting. Because I have no intention of charging for the service, I'm paying for 100% of everything myself, and currently am "between jobs", so it's rough.

Anyway, very keen for any feedback :)

Cheers

Chill.

Yep,

was pinging between 5 and 11 at about 10PM last night to the Teamspeak. I am also on BigTime and have no trouble with it as the traffic is national.

Once we get some people with decent connections joining up, and more games allowed, we could get some serious gaming going!

i came across this several months ago, is there any chance you will be getting a CS source server?

And can I ask why its AOE II not AOE III?

Thanks

KiwiLAN doesn't run game servers, it's simply a VPN service similar to Garena, and requires end-users to host their own "LAN Games".

There's a good chance I'll be opening the firewall up for a lot more games, but currently I'm keeping it fairly limited so I don't outgrow myself basically.

I'm starting with some of the older games as well as some of the newer games, specifically because I know a fair few people have AOE II, but it's pretty much impossible to find people to play it with. I've also been requested to allow Starwars Galactic Battlegrounds, because apparently the Microsoft ZONE service has been taken offline?

I also know that it's easy to play CS Source, especially online, if you have a legit version ... ;-)

That said, I'm still keen for any feedback / suggestions, and take it all onboard :)

Or your not banned by Steam for sharing your account lol...

It's a great service you offer, and I hope you find some sponsers, cant be easy paying for it from your back pocket while not working.

If anyone wants a game of AOE II or III let me know :D Oh I didnt check to see if you had forums there, if not might be a good idea, or even a live chat box so people can get in contact. Sorry if you already have features similar.

I'd love to play a game of AOEII sometime (and even some UT2004) but according to the website the resistance server is down so one can't connect to it.

Unless the darkness server allows us to player UT/AOE as well??

Yeah have a live chat box on the website already, PLUS a TeamSpeak 3 server which is awesome, PLUS forums are a "likely" addition although we may end up just using GetThatGame forums (They're a family friends business).

Darkness is up, but I'm just working on a way to sync the user authentication between the two. If anybody happens to be a PHP guru, I'd love to hear from you ;-)

Definitely not easy paying for it, but I'm doing it as a service to the gamer community, mostly coz I used to wish for something like this myself, now I have the knowledge to create it, so why not share it :-)

Don't forget you can always jump on the TS3 service ;)

We're making progress, hopefully will have the other server added by the end of the month, not to mention support for Consoles is in the works, as we recently mentioned in the PCWorld article.

Yea, TS3 FTW.

But communicating before getting on is difficult as internet is disconnected and many don't have the lugsury of a second computer by their side.

Getting on and waiting with out the ability to at least surf the internet or play another game is difficult. Xfire is good for getting a group together before a game. :)

You *can* still be online, by unticking "Use default remote gateway" in the Advanced TCP/IPv4 properties, but some games such as WC3 don't work properly as they won't then broadcast the traffic out that connection. Apparently however other games like COD4 work with that option unticked. That means you can be "online" and be on KiwiLAN at the same time.
