Are you connecting them directly with one cable or do you have a network swith or router that they are both connected to?

How does the laptop get online?
You will need to set the ip addresses manually on the laptop LAN and the xbox as they have no way of getting one automatically when connected together that way.
Eg: make the laptop and the xbox

The xbox won't be able to get online this way though unless you can setup Internet connection sharing on the laptop.
