Ragnor:
plo009: Hmm, they say the only difference is one uses the broadcom chip and one uses the trendchip, so does this matter?

Yes this matters, the T with the trendent chipset does not have the ip extension feature for half bridging.

I also have an old megapass wireless adsl2+ modem/router which i got from xnet a few years ago, how can i check if i can use it as a modem to set up a half-bridge with the WR1043ND router?

Login to the admin ui and look for an option called ip extension or half bridge, most likely it won't have it.

I ordered the 8840 from pcforce, but they are sending me the TD W8901G instead because they are out of stock on the 8840. Does this modem support half bridge with the WR1043ND router or should i return it and get another modem? Btw, how can i check if a modem supports bridging/half-bridging when looking at it's support specs?

From what i've read online the 8901G seems to use the trend chip which means it doesn't support half-bridge? Sorry for the noob questions but i'm really confused abot the whole idea of bridging/half-bridging even after reading online, so it basically allows some of all of the connection/configuration to be done on the router instead? Why did everyone recommend me half-bridging over full?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

You can't full bridge PPPoA (unlike PPPoE) connections which most ADSL2+ in NZ uses.

If you connect two routers you will have double NAT which can cause problems with gaming, voip, p2p etc.

You can't make the modem/route the primary device (doing dhcp and qos) and make TP Link 1043 a dumb wifi ap/switch because you want to use the 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT or Gargoyle Router which has way better QoS than general retail hardware/default firmware.

Check my first post on the previous page for the list of modems that are:
a) Available in NZ
b) <$100
c) Have half bridge/ip extension.

Apart from those most modems do not have this feature.

Thanks again, its just that the modems you listed only seem to sell from online stores that import directly when the order is placed so i was trying to find a local store such as pcforce, computer lounge, playtech or pbtech that sells them for better support incase anything happens. Unfortunately pcforce ran out of stock and the suppliers only have the 8840T atm.

You can get an older version of the Dynalink RTA1320 for $10-20 on Trademe. Only problem is they tend to run hot and only last a year or two.

Looks like there are also a few Netcomm NB6 and TP Link TD-8840 non T on Trademe.

If you don't mind spending ~$100 there's the Draytek Vigor 120 which does full PPPoA to PPPoE passthrough.

Thanks, there is a few cheap Dynalink modems, but they'll be my last resort. I could only find the NB6Plus though, also see a 8840 for $59, now confirming with the seller to make sure it isn't the similar 8840T.

Sigh.. they mailed me a 8840T in the end even though they confirmed it was the 8840. I think the 8840 is completely gone in NZ now......

So all the Dynalink  RTA1320,  RTA1320E and  RTA1320V6 floating on trademe should work for the half bridge? I found a few posts that seem to state the the E and V6 variations have a bit of problem with the halfbridge Also see draytek vigor 120 for auction and trademe, is there any reason why it costs ~$30 more than the other modems when new?

To pay my salary Tongue Out

DrayTek devices are generally used by IT integrators who want NZ-based telephone support and are willing to pay a premium for that.

If you have a problem, or even just need some help setting it up correctly, I'm here Cool

We have some refurbished DV120 here at the moment. Ask Hadley at nicegear nicely and he might supply one to you at a good price (we can't sell direct).

Would you mind to tell us the name of that TradeMe trader so we can be extra careful when buying things from him/her?
