I have a Netgear WNDR3700 wireless router.  Every internet capable device in the house runs via this router either via LAN cable or WiFi.  In other words all internet traffic in our house must go through this router

The usage meter says we have used 11GB,

Telecom says we have used 40GB and now we are on dial up speed (actually not that much slower than normal).  The Telecom help desk said it is unusual to have such a large discrepancy between the router and their records

So should I believe my usage meter and tell telecom they are mistaken?  Note I am not bagging telecom, but I am a little skeptical.  Any helpful info much appreciated.

I would personally flash the WNDR3700 with TomatoUSB firmware and use the usage meter built into that. I know for sure that works, within a few megabytes of telecoms usage meter anyway.

Thanks for that suggestion I'll look into it for future use.  I'm still keen to ehar cfrom anyone who can offer advice whether I should believe the usage meter on my router and argue with Telecom on that basis.

Assuming usage meter is correct, the only explanation I an think of is that somehow my ADSL modem is compromised.

3 - 4 years back Telecom blocked our broadband account because (they said) our modem had been infected with malware that was causing modems to undertake DoS attacks. 

I have a back up of my modem firmware from install so I could re-flash to eliminate this possibility.

That's a big discrepancy.

How is the 40GB usage telecom reports split between download and upload traffic?

Does your router show the 11GB split by upstream/downstream traffic so you can see if the varience is fairly even between upload/download or if the difference is mainly in one direction?
