I have a router sitting behind Telstra Cable modem (motorola). I tried to connect to it using the modem static IP (from tracert) but no luck. I have already set the router to accept remote connection from my remote IP (from google and tracert).

What do I need to check? Do I need to configure my cable modem, or specify the connection port for the router?

There;s usually a few different settings in the router to do with remote admin. Some default to serving the admin page on port 8080 instead of the usual 80, so try that. But you should be able to change settings to whatever port you like.

And it goes without saying that if you are allowing remote admin access, change the password from the default admin/admin

You don't need to configure anything on the modem. It's all on the router itself. Also note that if you already do a port forward and the admin pages are on the same port then it will not work.

Thanks for the replies. The port has been changed to 8001 and have made the password reasonably secure.

I'm not sure what you mean - but I have no port forwarding set at the moment.

There is nothing to access in the modem related to this issue as it's a fully transparent bridge.
