Hi Everybody!

First post on Geekzone, and hoping to help some folks out that may be having Firmware problems with Linksys modems, Specifically X-series models (X2000 and X3000).

I got my internet connected yesterday and while I was in the process of setting everything up, I thought it would be a good idea to upgrade the Firmware on my Cisco Linksys X2000 router, as the current version was quite dated. I jumped on the Cisco site and tracked down the latest version, which is version 2.0.04 (Annex A). The initial setup and Firmware installation went smooth, however, after surfing the net a bit, it soon became apparent that there were a few Login issues on a couple of site (eg. Facebook) and connection speeds felt very sluggish.

Anyway, after a good few hours of fine tuning and research, I found that a few people are having problems with the new Firmware that Linksys released, some more than others. The work around that was suggested, was to "allow" cookies in the router. As one person explained; "Under Security/Firewall in the X2000, I had to _CHECK_ the cookies field for my PC to work with sites like google, amazon, linkedin, and others" . The buggy Firmware however was still, well, bugging me, so I kept on searching for a better solution.

Long story short, I email a very helpful guy somewhere in America who had the previous version of Firmware, which he was kind enough to send to me (still a newer version than what was on the router - version 2.0.03), and the router is LOADS better now. (you can PM me for the previous version).

Not to badmouth the company, but reading up about this whole thing; it definitively sounds like Linksys dropped the ball on this one, releasing Firmware that caused issues easily detected through basic testing, or so it seems. Hopefully they are working on a new Firmware version at the moment which will fix all this.

So for anyone who are having troubles with the Linksys X-series router Firmware, here are two Solutions:

1: Open a browser and go to the router address ( and check the Cookie setting in the router. (Under the Security tab)

2: Downgrade the Firmware to version 2.0.03. Now, this is a bit more tricky as I couldn't find a previous version anywhere and Linksys apparently don't support the older Firmware, hence the reason why it's not available on the website. So if you would like the previous version, please PM me and I can email the attachment to you.

As I said, Linksys are probably working on a new version, so if you haven't upgraded your Firmware, best to wait for a little while longer :)

Since you are talking about X3000 as well ... I got a new one for a client of mine.  They use Xtra Webmail and wanted some more capability.  Cut a long story short - with their old Thompson router from Telecom they had no troubles accessing Xtra in both IE8 and Firefox 16.  It appears they did not have any problems with the router as delivered.  I go and update the X3000 because of some other issues to do with DDNS to the latest firmware, and update Firefox to 17.0.1 - all hell lets loose - they can't log on to their accounts, just get the white screen of death in the browsers.
What's happening is the browser is attempting to do a pair of GETs (one reports a 200 OK, the other then reports a redirection 302), repeated ad nausum and nothing comes back from Yahoo or anybody else.  Don't know why this is happening, but I think I might try a downgrade of the router if I feel brave.
I did discover a bug in Firefox, but I don't think this is the cause as it works ok when using another router.  [Plenty of errors in the Yahoo and Firefox code though.  Just turn on the debugger and logger to see.]

So, is anybody out there seeing problems with Yahoo Xtra and Linksys X3000 combined?

Got my Cisco Linksys X3000 problem with logging into Xtra fixed. 

The Cause.  The firmware upgrade to (using FW_X3000_AnnexA_1.0.04.007_20121009.bin from the support site) was a good idea 'cos it gives IPv6 support when the crunch comes.  However, the cisco support lady said to reset to factory defaults because I was trying to fix an issue with DDNS (router was not displaying the status) - impact was router went into a mode of filtering out cookies.  This was why IE8 and Firefox both had problems with Yahoo Xtra, and why the problem moved about (i.e. from one page to another, I guess it depended on the cookie status).

The fix was to go to the Security page of the router and in the Filter section, tick the Cookies box and then Save Settings.  Counter-intuitive but did the job - thanks to this blog for the X2000 for this solution.

Glad to hear you got it sorted, ShermanJ.

I'm going to keep an eye on the Cisco site for any new Firmware versions from Linksys for the X2000/3000. When they release a new version I'll do some testing with the new Firmware and report back here.

Interesting: the current version on Cisco's site is lower than yours: Ver.1.0.03 (Build 1). Did they pull it or did you get it from another Cisco site?

I have tried to find the firmware release I had used (FW_X3000_AnnexA_1.0.04.007_20121009.bin) but it has vanished!
Cisco USA discussion thread gives no clues:

Note: NZ support downloads has an old version, see  You do need Annex A by the way.

I don't think I can help anymore.

Thinking about it, it's 11MBytes so I can't send by email and I don't want/have dropbox otherwise I would use that to transfer the file to you (at your own risk).

Hmm, very interesting. Yes it does look as though ver 2.0.04 (for the X2000) has been removed from that site as well, and version 2.0.03 is now available for download. Glad they took down!
