We recently moved in to a new place and signed up for broadband with Telecom. I bought a new Asus DSL-N55U modem/router which was highly reccomended and doesn't really have any bad reviews that I can find. When I first connected I was very happy, the internet seemed fast and responsive. was showing 10mb/s download and 0.77mb/s upload (not great I know but not too bad either). However when I have friends over to play games (up to 6 laptops connected by wifi playing league of legends), the internet will be fine for a while and then the ping will shoot up, lag spikes occur and eventually we will all be disconnected for a few seconds, and it is intermittant after that. tests at these times show around 5mb/s download and .3 mb/s upload ( i guess because it is sharing between all the computers?). The modem/router at this time feels extremely hot, and if I turn it off for a while and then reconnect (reconnecting takes ages), the problem seems to go away for a while before returning again.

So it SEEMS to me that the modem/router can't handle all the wifi connections and overheats causing the lag and disconnections but it's a pretty good one so this is surprising. Could I get advice on whether I will be able to fix this by buying a high-end router and seperate modem? I'm happy to spend the money if it fixes it but dont want to waste my time and money if the issue is elsewhere. Is my internet connection from my provider just too slow to handle 6 computers gaming (league of legends really is not a demanding game so that surprises me too)?

What should i do?!

Also you will have to excuse my ignorance but what modem stats specifically were you after? Details regarding the modem/router I'm using are here but im guessing you want some sort of read-out from my computer? If you let me know what you want me to provide I will find it.

soooooo looks like you're trying to be funny and telling me I need to provide a whole lot more information? If i knew how to find all the information "peterreader" advises me to provide I'm pretty confident I would also know the answer to my question - I came to a forum because I obviously don't know a whole lot about this. If you really need all that detailed information to answer my two part question (Could it be my modem/router overheating that is causing lag/disconnection or is it just that my broadband is too slow for 6 computers gaming?) then it would be a lot more useful (and nice) to let me know how to find that information.

Are you connecting via 2.4Ghz or 5GHz? 2.4Ghz in some urban enviroments is pretty much worthless these days due to congestion. You might want to try something like inSSIDer to establish the best channel.

The problem could also just be excessive UDP traffic and the router choking under load, but we can really only speculate.
