Hello all,

I am planning to upgrade my wireless gear as I need more coverage and better signal reliability, so I was looking at acquiring an asus rt-ac66u. Stats for this router are impressive, however I am a little confused on whether I need an adsl modem as well to connect to the internet or I can just use the router alone.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Roberto

Recommend the Netgear Nighthawk for extra $20. Much better SoC inside. Future proof with many open source custom firmware upgrades to come. Out of the box, the QoS is also a lot better configured.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Yes it does if you have an ADSL or VDSL connection. If you are on UFB/Fibre then you only need this Netgear router.

Yep, I have the ASUS and you will need a modem.

I'd recommend the Draytek Vigor 120 - allows pure pass through so all internet settings are done at the router end. Can be had regularly off Trademe for about $40-50.

Ty Tech. Wireless-wise, how do you find the ASUS for coverage and speeds?

The Asus RT-AC66U is the best purchase of wireless equipment especially when paired with its PCI-e AC wireless card.
Good performance, good customisation, high reliability. I use it as my AP with the Fritz! Box as my modem since we have VoIP -> Analogue phones.
