Hi all,

I'm having some trouble with a brand new DrayTek Vigor 120 modem.  Previously I have been running a Linksys AM300 with sync speed of 7.9Mbps / 0.8Mbits until I started having problems.

Per the typical advice of telecom, I tried their router 2wire 2701HGV-W and was getting a sync rate of 8.8Mbps/1Mbps (see full details below)

However, this modem has junk I don't want or need such as wireless, firewall that can't be disabled and DMZPlus mode that just doesn't work.

So I ordered a Vigor 120 in the hopes I could run PPPoA -> PPPoE bridged and get only what I need.  However, the sync speeds for this new modem are almost half of the other two.  Anywhere from 4.6Mbps to 5.5Mbps download.

It seems the DSLAM is using a broadcom chipset.  But the AM300 has a TI one and still was syncing faster.  I don't know my distance, but est based on 2wire attenuation of 1.5km.

Is there anything that can be done to get a better speed out of the vigor?  I've tried playing with the modulation but no luck.

I'm running the modem direct to a Linux box for firewall routing btw.

If you have just purchased the DV120 it is old stock. It was replaced with the DV130 over 6 months ago... Maybe up to a year ago.

Draytek.com.au has several different firmware versions for different dslam compatability. You could try these.

Have you got a master filter installed. I've seen on good lines some of the highest sync rates using the 120, but often they do sync lower on poor lines for better stability




Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster and even more now as they are upgrading their rural Conklins. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend $195 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

I did just buy it on Ascent for $98. 

I did try the site http://www.draytek.com.au/downloads.php?type=Vigor120, but their latest firmware shows 3.2.4.4 3431301 from 2010 when the modem shows:

Should I have gotten the DV130 instead?  They have a nasty restocking fee for this kind of thing. :(

I'm renting and the landlord is not willing to allow anything.  But still, a 4.6 vs 8.8 is a huge gap.  And since two other chipsets/modems work at 8-9Mbps, I would expect the DV120 be at least close to that.  Even 7 would be better than 5ish.

Sorry, my bad.  I thought the DV130 was a replacement for the DV120 but I've just re-checked and I see the DV120 is a current product.  The DV130 is more expensive, but does VDSL as well.

You'll see at http://www.draytek.com.au/downloads.php?type=Vigor120 that they have different firmware versions for different modem codes "for getting better operability with different ISPs/ IPDSLAMs".  I've never taken the time to try these out on any of my Draytek devices.

Turns out it's actually version 2  Vigor120 here http://www.draytek.com.au/downloads.php?type=Vigor120v2

However, I can't seem to find a way to use their IOP modem codes to match a broadcom DSLAM.  I'd rather not try 10+ different firmwares looking for the right one. :p

However, it seems to have made no difference after flashing with that version.  Maybe a bit slower in fact.

Hmmmm... beyond my experience to comment any further.  We use the Draytek's quite extensively on commercial sites and have not seen any performance decreases when installing them.

Network capability:

 

  • Broadband > 10 Mbps

However, I've never seen over 8.8Mbps with any modem.  Is there way to find out how far I am from the exchange?

That's pretty high attenuation for a 10Mbps zone. First thing is to really look at your internal wiring and eliminate that.

That might explain the slower than 10Mbps, but what about the DV120 getting 5Mbps when two other modems get 8+?

Sure I'd like to improve the wiring, but since I'm renting not much I can do about that at the moment.

My first answer to that is wiring.

A bitloading graph would potentially explain a lot. Not all modems are created equally, and performance across all the bins can vary between different devices.
