but are you paying for a phone service? if you are you should be able to by punching down different combinations of the incoming lines to a jack point work out the correct combination so you can then connect up your cat cable.

ie connect your phone jack to the different pairs of the black incoming cable to work out whats going on there.

How are you punching wires dowm? With a tool? or just a screw driver or something? You may have damaged the IDC on the rj45.

Jase2985 - yep our account is through Snap and before the renovation we had a phone line in it. Have kept account active through renovation do should be just ready to reconnect. Have tried the brown white pair coming in as mentioned in last post but have not tried other combos based on earlier reply that old cable pairs are black/yellow and brown/white.

I did hold a simple voltage tester on them in different combos and got a flicker on non-paired combos I.e brown/yellow and black/white. The black/yellow showed no flicker. Does that say something?

Chevrolux - using a punch down tool, only stripped wires to be sure while testing.

Yes, That you should get someone who knows what they're doing to come spend 10minutes and fix the mess that the electrican left you by the sounds of things otherwise you will never have the best broadband your line can handle

Hi Andib - to be fair all he did was connect the cat6 un-paired at the demarc which is easily disconnected. He always said he doesn't do networking so it's not like he's gone through and botched the whole house up. The voltage test I did was on the actual incoming cable pairs from the street.

But yes I'm starting to agree it needs a prof to test it and sort it properly :)

connect the cables that flickered up to a phone jack and then to a fone and see if there is a dial tone

When I did this I took an old corded phone up into the roof space and held the (slightly stripped) pairs onto the phone plug to get a dial tone. Not sure that's the recommended process...

Hey thanks again everyone for the responses... we were on the right track but it turned out the line was dead anyway!

CoffeeBaron came yesterday afternoon and got everything connected up ship shape internally... connected the master filter I had bought in the roof on my side of the demarc with the incoming black/yellow pair going into the orange/white 'line' pair for the master filter. Sending the master filter blue/white pair (phone) down the cat6 blue/blue-white pair and the master filter green/white pair (modem) down the cat6 green/green-white pair.

In my cabinet he punched the cat6 blue/blue-white pair into the patch panel back of port 24 (for phone - will probably only connect 1 phone) and the cat 6 green/green-white punched into back of port 23 with an RJ45 to RJ11 cable going straight into the modem.

I called my ISP (Snap) who booked in Chorus, they turned up first thing this morning and the technician said he was getting dial tone on a line that had been left naked and not connected into the house. I suspect someone had pulled them out when the house was reclad during the renovation and poked the dead wire back through not the active one. Anyway I told him it hadn't been touched and he was good enough to say it was on their side of the demarc and they wouldn't charge for it.

He reconnected the active line to the line going into the house and voila we're connected!

I've learnt a few good things in the process and only had to pay a very reasonable amount for CoffeeBaron so fully recommend him to any other wannabe geeks like me who get stuck! ;)

Hmm, was that the old non twisted, badly corroded pair that was actually active? I got nothing on that one when I tested :(
Hopefully the Chorus tech moved it on to the 049 cable. At least you're not too far off for fibre :)

Hey coffeebaron... yeah it must have been, I wonder if they had refreshed anything at their end... the guy at Snap the night before had been trying to refresh the line or something but didn't see any change... perhaps however that woke the other line up.

Anyway it's good enough for a few months till fibre is here. Thanks again :)
