Mikrotik RB951G-2HnD + any android phone or usb stick.

$120 for the mikrotik router and you could stick it on any network.

If you have a little time on your hands here are some instructions for using a Raspberry Pi with a Huawei K5150 which is a 4G stick you can pickup from most mobile shops. Pretty cost effective solution... plus you can run other stuff on the PI if you want to :-)

Jase2985: the one he got is no good either as it does 900 / 2100 on UMTS / HSDPA / HSUPA

That'll teach me for rushing things. This raises a couple of new questions, if you don't mind me asking. I'll be using this router exclusively in the Wellington CBD.

  • How reliable is Spark's LTE service in Wellington CBD? How often would 3G fall-back be required?
  • The router does support UMTS 2100 MHz, I understand Spark does have 2100 MHz service in some areas, what about Wellington CBD?
If the view is that 3G fall-back is important, and I can't count on Spark's 2100 MHz, then I'll consider making a move to Vodafone/2Degrees.

if it's going to be in a permanent spot and there is good 4G coverage; lack of fall-back won't be an issue. If you take it on a road trip though, it will be problematic.

Sounds promising, 4G at the office is very good. I'll give the D-Link DWR-922 + Spark a shot. Will let you guys know how it works out.

I'd say it will work OK with Spark.
Spark and Vodafone both have 1800MHz and some 2600MHz for 4G.
They both have 700MHz as well - but that's not supported on your device.

The 900MHz 3G fits with Vodafone - if your device supported 850MHz for 3G it would be much happier with Spark. The is more pronounced if you are within a building that has poor reception.

Awesome. Looking at my phone right now, in the office (where the router's going to sit), it's got full 5 bars on 4G ;-)

You know, going into this, I had no idea compatibility could/would be an issue.  In my PC-oriented world, stuff generally works and inter-operates no problem, world-wide.  I naively expected the same from something like 3G/4G. Good learning experience!

Haha, true. So true. I stand corrected

When you know your stuff, you take it for granted, and it all seems obvious. Those that don't know, well... I'm sure there's plenty of examples of folks buying Intel motherboard + AMD CPU (or vice-versa).  Then there will be folks who buy DDR2 RAM for a DDR3 motherboard (or vice-versa), and folks who wonder why you can't play Bluray content over a VGA port.  Endless list...

Oh well, it is the way it is!

Just updating as promised with my experience so far.

So I got the D-Link DWR-922, and it's all set up on the Spark 4G network in Wellington.

Most importantly, it works. 4G signal is very good where I work so lack of 3G-fallback is not going to be an issue.

BUT, I'm experiencing performance issues. Web pages take a LONG time to load up. Each "piece" of a pages takes a second or two. Weird. My Huawei E8278 Wingle is blazingly fast in comparison. I'll try investigate and post another update.

Meanwhile, if there are obvious settings/configurations I should be using to get decent performance, please let me know.

Performance issues seem to have resolved themselves overnight. I guess temporary Spark/internet issues could have been the cause.

So all is well. The D-Link is doing great, couldn't be happier with it so far.
