lxsw20: The Vodafone one is the HG659, which had firmware issues, you will find if you do a search on here. Apparently new firmware has fixed this. If not you can flash onto the Spark firmware.

IF you're using it as a router why would you switch off DHCP?

Good advice - and there's no issue flashing Spark firmware onto the Vodafone version?

It's to act as a ethernet switch/wireless AP not a full router; it is located at the other end of the house to the Fritzbox and provides wired connections for our fixed devices in that end of the house (Tivo, Squeezebox, Fire TV) and wireless internet for the same. I'm not big on networking at all, but my understanding is you shouldn't have more than one device handing out IP addresses, and in our case the Fritzbox fulfils this role.

OK that makes sense. Yes you can use it as a dumb switch/wifi AP.

I've never tried the flash, but others on here have - do a search for info.

Cheers - I found the thread on the Voda firmware update, so will initially try after upgrading to this (it mentions DNS as one area that's fixed, so hopefully this will enable manual DNS settings to stick on my parents' unit as well); if there are any issues I can try the Spark firmware.

Thanks for the idea - it's saved me a few dollars buying a router when I didn't need to!

I have the ASUS router. Delighted with it. Improved my wireless speeds significantly and I have set a dedicated 5Ghz network connection for days when there's lots of 2.4Ghz noise going on. Looking forward to using it with fibre next year.
