Hey guys, I'm thinking about buying a 2nd hand Cisco 1921 and configuring it to run the WAN for my home network, I'm going to get fibre thought spark or bigpipe not sure yet, do i just need to set on a virtual interface, encapsulation DOT1Q 10, auto negotiate? Or do i need to set up a PPPoE connection?
Just wondering about the connection specific settings. Thanks!

also on a side note what do you guys think of these? they are so cheap https://www.ubnt.com/edgemax/edgerouter-x/

Tagging and encapsulation totally depends on ISP setup.

That table will be handy for you, I have heard good things about edge routers on UFB. the setup being the steep curve. - Which considering the hardware your talking about, ild assume you will be fine dealing with.

I believe that it's always VLAN 10 for data.

If you do get an Edgerouter consider the lite version. I have one myself and there are others on GZ who have them as well. I can also give you a copy of my configuration file that will get you going on Spark or another ISP that uses PPP and VLAN 10. The setup wizard will work if you go with an ISP that uses PPP but without any VLAN tagging. Such as BigPipe.

I wouldn't recommend the edge router X only because it was only launched recently. And alot of the new things that Ubiquity release tend to be a bit buggy at first. The Edge router lite has been out for a while now.

Yeah im not sure what I will go with yet but your config is very welcome! could you email it to me ill pm you my email address! I'm tempted to just stick with cisco mainly because I know how to configure and troubleshoot cisco very easily, do the edgerouter's have ACL's, QoS and VPN options?

Thanks for the link Jase!

Yes to VPN. QOS will need to confirm what kind. It definitely has fq-codel. Don't know about ACLs. The Edge router firmware is a fork of vyata so most of the CLI like vyata. Also check how fast the Cisco you are considering can do PPP. As there was a thread on the spark forum of someone complaining that their UFB was slow. And the problem was that they were using an old cisco router. They didn't like being told to use the spark supplied Huawei router instead.

Yeah I was just reading a fourm before I went to sleep that said the 1921 could do 68 Mbps (aggregate) so if I get the 200/20 plan from spark I'd need (200/20)/2= 110Mbps...
So it looks like I might have to look at a different a router from Cisco or just get the edger outer, the edgerouter is looking like it is the best one because of price and speed I just wanted to know about ACL's so I could use it as a firewall as well and normally processing them can slow down a router because of how it has to apply it to each packet.
Thanks for the heads up about the 1921!

So I've looked over all the options and the Edgerouter light pretty much wins hands down loving the cli on it has everything I wanted and is fast!

I did read more into the Edgerouter X, it pretty much looks like it is just a switch that they put some routing capabilities into so with out being able to offload the routing onto the hardware it is lacking in speed somewhat...

Now I just need to find a good wireless AP maybe I should just match it and get the Ubiquiti UAP-LR? Not so sure about the 10/100 Ethernet connection though with a few users on it.
