I've been wanting to replace my ageing netgear nighthawk r7000 for awhile now, was wondering if anyone could recommend me which router to go with. I've been reading about the differences between the edgerouter X and the edgerouter 4, but I don't have enough domain knowledge to know what benefits you get from the edgerouter 4 to know if it justifies the price increase.

My use case is a flat with 5 heavy internet users all on wired connections, we'd need about 8-10 ports either through the router or via a switch. We have gigabit fibre through bigpipe. We are looking for something that can handle the gigabit and minimise latency jitter (in whatever way a router can help with this issue), online gaming performance is a priority. We'd need a solution for wifi as well, although my current plan was to put the nighthawk in AP mode and use that as our access point as wifi speed isn't a huge priority. One flatmate's computer is currently running a plex server that we access locally and remotely, but we were thinking of running this on a discrete box instead, if this makes any difference to our network situation.

At this stage I was leaning towards either the edgerouter X or edgerouter 4 with a TP-link 8 port gigabit switch, and putting the nighthawk in AP mode, just struggling to decide whether getting the edgerouter 4 is worth the cost, or whether we should look at the USG or something similar. Configuration complexity isn't a factor I'm too worried about, just looking for what will give the best wired connection performance.

Appreciate any advice and thank you for this guide.

@xolu Depending on your budget I recommend this: https://gowifi.co.nz/wireless/udm.html

It is a very high performance router coupled with a good access point etc. Can route Gigabit absolutely no problems and is easy to use. This is a bit expensive, but also saves the trouble of configuring an Edgerouter. When you consider the cost of the UniFi NanoHD along with a USG and Switch this is actually very good value.

If you're needing more Ethernet ports then just grab another switch to go with it (I'd strongly recommend grabbing a UniFi switch). This unit also gives you the ability to add more UniFi equipment like access points and even cameras and have it managed from a central location.

I did have a look at the dream machine as it does tick off most of the boxes in one device. Is it a concern to have a long ethernet connection from the ONT to the udm? Our ONT is located in the corner of our garage, and for best wifi coverage I'd likely have to put the dream machine upstairs, so I'd say, maybe 15-20 metres cord length from the ONT.

15-20m is not an issue, if you go above around 100m then you have an issue.

Looks like they are starting to refresh the USG line; the USG Pro replacement was just announced, the UMG Pro

Here's an overview of the hardware specifications for the UMG-Pro:

Processor: Quad ARM Cortex-A57 Core at 1.7 GHz
System Memory: 2 GB DDR4
2 x 1/10G SFP+ WAN/LAN Ports
2 x 10/100/1000 RJ45 WAN/LAN Ports
1 x RPS DC Input
1 x Smart Power Outlet 125VAC (Max 10A)
1 x 1.3" Color LCD Touch Display

The UMG-Pro will be available in the EA store soon.

Note: The UMG-Pro will be adoptable to an external controller and will not host any controllers on it.

Hopefully that means a USG-3 replacement is next.

It seems the Edgerouter lite is no longer being sold, and it's unclear what the direct replacement at the price point is.

Is the ER-4 worth the extra price on gigabit connections?

I'm still running an Edgerouter 4 and it is very solid - also runs much cooler which is a plus. Would recommend.

At a pinch though - the Edgerouter X (https://www.gowifi.co.nz/routers/er-x.html) handles Gigabit fine. I've also used the Edgerouter 10X which again handles Gigabit well too (https://www.gowifi.co.nz/routers/er-10x.html)

Earlier comments suggest  Edgerouter X couldn't get above 600mbps, has this changed?

With Offloading enabled it can handle Gigabit fine. However if you've got many complex rules then the 4 will be better suited for you.

Although the ER-X is limited by internal connectivity to a routing speed of 1 Gbit/s aggregated (i.e. UL + DL).

This means for UL heavy loads, your DL speed would be capped. E.g 450Mbps in UL would limit DL to 550Mbps. Having said that, for most real-world residential fibre uses its a great option. I used one at the end of my Voyager Gb line for a couple of months, and its an amazingly capable box for the price.

Never mind - you can use/reflash it with OpenWrt when no longer supported by Ubiquiti.

Very interesting, I've ended up buying an ER-4 as I couldn't get a config to work once bringing it back with TFTP. I assume something was broken internally, new USB also resulted in it being dead quickly (even with new power supply as well),

Great news is I get a powerful router out of it.

Does anyone know if the additional mesh units talk to each other directly or does everything have to go through the main router first?
Ie can you daisy chain them for a longer house?
Cheers

Hi, most will mesh between all any any members, if you can run a cable all the better.

Cyril

Edit, typically most traffic is north bound to the internet so its going to head to the main unit anyway.
