I've been wanting to replace my ageing netgear nighthawk r7000 for awhile now, was wondering if anyone could recommend me which router to go with. I've been reading about the differences between the edgerouter X and the edgerouter 4, but I don't have enough domain knowledge to know what benefits you get from the edgerouter 4 to know if it justifies the price increase.
My use case is a flat with 5 heavy internet users all on wired connections, we'd need about 8-10 ports either through the router or via a switch. We have gigabit fibre through bigpipe. We are looking for something that can handle the gigabit and minimise latency jitter (in whatever way a router can help with this issue), online gaming performance is a priority. We'd need a solution for wifi as well, although my current plan was to put the nighthawk in AP mode and use that as our access point as wifi speed isn't a huge priority. One flatmate's computer is currently running a plex server that we access locally and remotely, but we were thinking of running this on a discrete box instead, if this makes any difference to our network situation.
At this stage I was leaning towards either the edgerouter X or edgerouter 4 with a TP-link 8 port gigabit switch, and putting the nighthawk in AP mode, just struggling to decide whether getting the edgerouter 4 is worth the cost, or whether we should look at the USG or something similar. Configuration complexity isn't a factor I'm too worried about, just looking for what will give the best wired connection performance.
Appreciate any advice and thank you for this guide.
