Its so valuable to have these tutorials.

I was wondering if it can be updated?

When I was going through it, there are references that don't exist in my Wizard.

I have an Edgerouter X SPF... Not sure if there are major differences?

For instance, you mention not turning on bridging. But I have no option to even enable or disable that.

I also have an option for

One LAN: Only use one LAN

That is not in the screenshots or mentioned.

Also, are there any recommended places to get information on networking terminology? I'm pretty technical, but this is definately a dark art that I have not had much experience with.

Specifically, there is a lot fo talk about interfaces. ANd for instance eth0 and eth0.10 appear in my list of interfaces. BUt I dont know why they are split, since eth0 is the port being used for the ONT connection....

And it talks about the WAN interface. Is that the port? Or external internal? Or....

@normanc Each Edgerouter is different and I don't have a collection of Edgerouters around here. I actually don't even use an Edgerouter anymore. So you get what you're given I'm afraid. The tutorial is still suitable for your router.

As the Edgerouter X has an integrated switch your LAN interface would be "switch0" - no bridging is required. eth0.10 refers to "Ethernet 0 VIF 10" as in VLAN 10 on port Ethernet 0.

Even if I updated the screenshots it still wouldn't match your Edgerouter.

Fair. I'd just seen you'd updated it only a month or so ago, and mentioned Edgerouter X, so I thought it should be pretty close.

So to clarify for me...

In the LAN interface settings in (for instance) Port Forwarding, should I only need to select "switch" as the interface?

And that would automatically be universal across all the ports?

For the Edgerouter X:

LAN: switch0
WAN depends on ISP - eth0 (if your ISP is just DHCP), eth0.10 (if your ISP is DHCP with VLAN 10) or pppoe0 (if your ISP does PPPoE).

I'd also like to remind you to be careful with port forwarding to anything. If the device you're forwarding to is not secure (eg, forwarding to a security camera or an IoT device) then this could compromise your whole network.

I've just been re-configuring my router, because something went squify so I just went back to default and built it back up again.

I have a QNAP NAS that can do UPNP and it used to detect the router as a UPNP device. But now it doesn;t. Even though I have the "enable auto firewall" turned on.

I don;t know what I've hosed to remove that capability...

(It's been a while since I configured, so it's gone out of my head. I can restore a config backup but thats an all or nothing situation)

Never mind. I found in the Wizard the UPNP tool. I must have used that previously.

But I also used the CLI commands supplied in the tutorial to set it up.

Can I ask what plan this is?

I have VF Fibre X (cable supplied here in Welly) and I'm curious about the speeds compared to real fibre.

VF place Fibre X at the same level and capability as actual fibre. So... I'm wondering about other peoples results too.

My speed tests range around a lot. sometimes 350-500Mb/s Occasionally up to 800Mb/s with a following wind.

I'm not expecting the advertised 900Mb/s, but 800 consistently doesn't seem unreasonable.

Of course I expect that other users also eat into the bandwidth.

@normanc Speedtests are not a great way to measure your actual internet speed. This comes down to how you're testing, if you're testing over WiFi / Ethernet and what device you're testing from.

It is also off topic for this thread so you're better to search up the 100's of discussions on the subject or start up another thread however you'll likely get told exactly what I've said above.

Well, OK. Fair that it's off topic. I hope I can find something useful because in the years I've been poking around the internet, I have yet to find anything more useful. I mean, latency and jitter sure. But those are pretty esoteric in many cases.

(And yeah, even in the SPeedtest app, if I test via the Vodafone servers, its about half the speed I get with something like Xtreme Networks or Citylink. So its not even down to MY setup. Which BTW is wired ethernet to my desktop, via Edgerouter X)
