Before I bother upgrading a sites fiber to something better than 20 up, what thruput are people seeing on fritzboxes setup to do a site to site VPN?

Im currrently constrained by a 20 up fiber and copying things off to a 15ish down VDSL connection and it doesnt seem to be saturating the VDSL at all. Would be moving the second fritz to a place on gig fiber (behind another router as the exposed host) and taking the other end up to a gig fiber plan, but im only seeing at most about 10 meg when copying files so if I cant get a decent amout more than that it would not be worth it.

Unless you have built in hardware acceleration you are never going to see astounding VPN performances.

If you want a high speed VPN connection, you need to run it from a powerful PC box, not a router.

Even a powerful PC box does not necessarily deliver great VPN throughput (especially if it is doing other stuff). Decent firewalls or VPN aggregators have hardware acceleration (Cavium Nitrox/Octeon or maybe some sort of ASIC). One option would be to look for a cheap 2nd hand Sonicwall/Fortigate/Juniper or 2 on trademe (they all typically have VPN hardware acceleration).
