I have Vodafone Broadband (Fibre). I have the Vodafone issued router in the garage, had it 4 years.

 

The internet on it has been crap for ages, When I connect via my cellphone, wife's cellphone, iPad I frequently get no internet access when WIFI is connected (PC has no problem). So I used a very old router as a wifi access point. Plugged that in at the lounge Ethernet port. That's worked for about 6 months but is slowly becoming a pain also, same issue. Turn it off and on and away we go again.

 

I want to solve this now, the internet I believe is fine, it the age and crap quality of the 'free' routers supplied when you sign up I think.

 

Ultimately my question is.

 

I've gone onto PB's website I get 'modem' and 'routers' as two separate category options - what's the difference? - what do I need to replace what I have in the garage?

 

Do I need to do anything so connect it to the internet once purchased it will it detect the internet somehow?

 

(I'm no geek like I said)

Can you clarify you actually have fibre and not the Vodafone cable service (which they now call "Fibre X")? Four years is a long time and Vodafone didn't have fibre back them.

 

Once we have this clarified we can help better.

I'm in a new subdivision and have fibre only, could only have world exchange for a long time.

Oh, so WorldxChange before. Yep, fibre.

 

Do you a computer to plug via ethernet cable directly to the router and check speed? I am guessing your problem is really WiFi interference - the more WiFi access points using the channels, the slower for everyone. Also old cordless phones, microwave ovens and other stuff can interfere.

 

If you can run a speedtest over an ethernet connection and the speed issue does not appear I'd consider getting some WiFi analyser for your smartphone and see how crowded is the WiFi around your place. Also remember walls don't mix well with WiFi. 

 

IF your WiFi is crowded, perhaps consider getting a 5 GHz capable access point, since this is not as busy yet and can handle loads better - at the expense of coverage.

Sounds like all you need to do is move the router out of its metal cage in the garage... assuming all the wiring for the structured cabling is in place.

 

 

What you will need to understand first is how the structured wiring at your place works. Perhaps give us a picture of the state of the contents of the box in the garage.

The OP says there's an AP in the house, plugged in... But yes, if the router were in a central location, less WiFi needed...

Did OP say router's in the garage? Yikes that would be the first thing to do - stand 2-3m from it and what is the internet like. If perfect then OP needs to move the internet into the house, or move everybody into the garage.

Garage = router, old  router as WiFi AP in lounge.

 

I'd say the "very old router" could be anything like a 802.11a - very slow. Or could be anything in between. In any case, taking in consideration the router is four years old and the AP is very old I'd say hardware upgrade is part of the plan. 

 

It could well continue to be router in garage, AP in lounge. But my suggestion stands - check what WiFi environment is around the house, and perhaps use 5GHz if devices are compatible (and 2.4 GHz with same SSID for legacy/old devices).

Can you tell us exactly what is connected to what? Including the exact model of what?

 

The going concern is that your router is either: too far away, suffering interference (if using 2.4GHz wifi).

 

Obviously in a long chain of command aka the internet the problem could lie anywhere, but we think the thing giving out wifi is the issue.

 

Why can't the device in the lounge give wifi? Why are you routing it to an old router in the garage?

I'm guessing the Vodafone issued router is a Huawei HG659 (VF userguide says copyright 2013; you've had your VF issued router for 4 years, and the HG659 appears to be the only modem (apart from the new Ultra Hub) that is supplied for fibre connections.)

 

I'm also guessing the iPad connects to the HG659 more often than the "very old router".

 

I'm guessing "turn it off and on" is referring to the HG659.

 

 

 

...can you please login to the HG659's web configuration page (likely 192.168.1.1) and login - the username is Admin and the password is either "VF-NZhg659" (without quotes) or an at sign followed by the last eight digits of your modem's serial number. (serial number is found on the back of the modem) (source for above info)

 

Once logged in, click on home network on the navigation bar, then on the left side menu click on LAN Interface. Scroll down until you see a line that says "DHCP Server". Click on this, wait a couple of seconds, then change the DNS mode from "modem acts as the DNS proxy" to "manually configure the DNS server for LAN devices". Enter the DNS servers to match Vodafone's DNS settings here

 

Or open this badly modified screenshot and click in the order of A to D once logged in. LAN interface status will be expanded by default - this was minimised/collapsed for screenshot purposes.
Enter the DNS servers (found here) in the boxes with digits to the right, below the toggle between DNS modes)

 

 

 

Finally, reboot the HG659, and your Wi-Fi should be more reliable.

 

 

 

(This will break internal DNS resolution that isn't NetBIOS or mDNS, but I doubt you use this given you've stated you're no geek)
