I recently bought a new Asus RT-AC5300 router (to replace the Huawei HG659b), and it works really well except for when I have to reboot the router and it can take anywhere from 10 - 120 minutes to get a WAN connection.  VLAN tag is set to 10, and WAN connection type is set to PPPoE.  I followed the UFB configuration settings at https://www.pbtech.co.nz/ASUSISPSettings

 

The syslog shows:

As you can see, on this particular attempt it took about 10 minutes, but other times it can take a lot longer.  Google seems to suggest it's a problem with the DHCP lease aggression setting trying to renew the WAN IP lease too many times within a short period, causing a temporary blacklist on my router's MAC address.  https://www.snbforums.com/threads/so-what-is-the-point-of-aggressive-dhcp-query-frequency.11738/ & https://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1011715/

 

However, the DHCP Query Frequency setting isn't an available option that can be set once the WAN type is set to "PPPoE".  It only appears under "Automatic IP".

 

Does anyone know how I can resolve this issue?  Surely, I'm not the only one with an Asus router and UFB that has this problem.  I am having this issue with both the latest official and merlin firmware.  I'm currently on Merlin 360.68.

Not the first time I've seen ASUS routers take excessive time to bring up the connection.

 

 

Most Linux PPPoE daemons I've seen retry at randomised intervals up to 30 seconds maybe a minute but 10 minutes is a bit too long imo.

 

 

Also a thread last week where it takes a while for the connection to come up.
