Hi,

 

Keen to get some view’s on my Unifi setup and some questions around roaming.

 

I have a site with 5 x UVC UAP‑AC‑PRO and a couple of the Unifi outdoor AP’s, I’m running management on a VM on a QNAP server (it’s also running my UVC Camera DVR on a separate VM)

 

The site is in the country and remote so will not have interference issues, AP’s are set to no security (Reason being it’s just serving purely internet access)

 

My question is around roaming between AP’s, it seems that Fast Roaming and Zero Handoff require wireless security to be enabled which we want to avoid, often devices get stuck to 1 AP and wont roam to the next AP until either wireless is toggled on and off, or the signal fades to nothing, so not great for the likes of mobile voice over wifi, I’m also having issues with some devices getting stuck on 2.4Ghz instead of 5.8Ghz which of should provide better throughput (however we want 2.4Ghz enabled for the reach) the radios are set to preference 5.8Ghz, SSID’s are all the same.

 

 

 

Interested in people’s opinions around roaming and preferring 5.8Ghz?

First of all wireless clients decide when to roam rather than the wireless network.  If you have roaming issues look at the following:

 

  • Are the access points too close to each other?
  • Are the radio transmit powers too high?
  • Are your minimum data rates too low?

As you make a wireless network more secure generally it will take wireless clients longer to connect or reconnect to a radio.

 

UniFi Fast Roaming is a proprietary system to try to reduce the amount of time it takes a wireless client connecting to a secure wireless network.  As you have implemented open authentication (no encryption) you don't have this issue.

 

UniFi Zero Handoff is a single channel architecture (SCA) system.   This means that each radio is on the same channel so the wireless client does not instigate roams from one radio to another.  The major promoter of SCA is Meru but in the few Meru deployments I have completed to get client stability the SCA options had to be disabled.

 

As a general rule the retry and error rates will be higher in the 2.4 GHz spectrum than 5 GHz.  For voice you need retry and error rates less than 2%.

 

I would recommend having a 5 GHz SSID; "Fast" for example; and a 2.4 GHz SSID; "Slow" for example.   Connect the devices that will be transmitting voice to the 5 GHz SSID and have all other devices connect to the 2.4 GHz SSID.   Do not implement Band Steering or load balancing on the 5 GHz radio as these features will cause voice quality drops as the wireless clients roam.

Your AP doesn't support Zero Handoff anyway so that's not an option for you. This is only supported on the gen 1 UniFi hardware and nothing newer pretty much because it's a terrible solution in 90% of use cases.

 

If you want roaming to work well you'll need to perform a site survey and adjust power levels as appropriate to ensure coverage is optimal and you don't have significant overlap (ie in most cases reduce power levels), remembering that auto on UniFi = full power.

I would start with a 14 dBm 2.4 GHz transmit power and 17 dBm for the 5 GHz.  You can adjust as required from there.

 

If you want voice services to work correctly you will need to complete an active survey to detect latency and jitter.  This requires a professional site survey application like AirMagnet Site Survey or Ekahau Site Survey Professional.
