Hi Team,

I'm in the process of configuring a Draytek Vigor 130 with an Edgerouter X, this is to fit into a Structured Wiring Cabinet using VDSL.

My speeds arent the best ~19Mb/s down using the Huawei - this could be due the distance from the Cabinet (~1.9Km). I'm unable to get the Line Attenuation and other information from the Vodafone supplied Hardware to be certain.

Anyway, I'm noticing my speed dramatically drop (~12Mb/s down) when I connect the Draytek + Edgerouter. Happy to post the Line details and the Draytek Configuration if needed.

Question:

Do I need to wait for the DLM to automatically adjust when connecting a new Modem?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

Note:

When I plug the Huawei back, I get ~19Mb/s down.

Hi ..

Apologies first off with the content presentation - not so straight forward as I first thought.

Below are the stats using the Vodafone Huawei Wifi Router - I couldn't access it via ssh (it looks disabled) to run any CLI commands but there was a Tab where they displayed some information:

Vodafone Huawei:

Downstream line rate (kbit/s): 19725

Downstream interleave depth: None

DSL up time: 5 days 23 hours 9 minutes 37 seconds

I haven't configured the Draytek's Web Interface to be access from the EdgeRouter yet, so the Stats below are collected by Connecting my PC directly

If not already try running Modem 4 Firmware on the DV130
http://www.draytek.com.au/support/downloads/vigor130/
It recommends Modem 8 but up until that FW modem 4 was the NZ firmware recommended and one I prefer, but give it ago, does give better connection links but takes longer to sync
I always found the DV130 had the best downstream link but not always the best upstream vs Huawei and Fritzbox
Modem 4 and 8 are also Vectoring ready, vs STD is not

I was running "Firmware ver 3.7.8.1" and have since upgraded to "Firmware ver 3.8.2.8".

Unfortunately, there has been no improvement in Speed.

Do I need to wait for the DLM to automatically adjust when connecting a new Modem?

It may be down to a configuration setting I have entered on the Vigor 130 Modem.

Try running Modem 4 Firmware, as I assume you are running Modem 8 FW at the moment ?
In my early playing with these different versions Modem 8 would put my DV130 Modem into 8b profile while Modem 4 FW was on 17a (where you should be)

If you are stuck with 8b and slow upstream then just stick with Huawei modem/router if it gives better results

EDIT - ddDLM won't change anything as you are on 6db profile now, fiddling around may get ddDLM to raise this as it thinks your line is noisy
But will come back if all good for a month or so

ddDLM seems to struggle to perfect things with a new modem.

I put my fritzbox in at familys for a littlewhile. Dropped from 19 to 15 straight away.

Took months to get back to 18.
Putting hg659b back in... Straight to 24.

Crux of it all, vigor130 and the fritzboxes both and different chipsets.
My favorite bridging modem is a nf4v. Has an broadcom chipset so syncs well. Absolutely rock solid.

Incorrect. DdDLM does more than just changes in noise margins to affect speeds.

With a downstream line attenuation of 31.4 dB, it's a miracle that you can get VDSL at all.

The old minimal standard for a VDSL install was less than 15 dB downstream attenuation, or 800m line length.

Remember that's reading the VDSL attenuation, not the 100hz(I've got a feeling its 120 or something its been a long weekend) reading which 15dB is based on.

Likely the OP was slightly over, but long as chorus toggle the port it looks good so go with it.

I've heard a rumor about that there may be changes afoot to that rule for the better (with vectoring in, it's even more beneficial to have everyone off ADSL).

Rumors only currently, i haven't had official confirmation.

Chorus website now says I can have VDSL never did before, and accurately tells I'm currently linked at 74Mbps
So their criteria for VDSL might be lowering
When trying to get VDSL, I was told Chorus rejected it due to 15db Attenuation limit (I was on 21db), took quite a bit of convincing that with my ADSL pretty well maxed out that VDSL would surely be a goer.

But JMT is basically getting ADSL performance from his VDSL, hopefully Vectoring brings him into better syncs

The big problem as they try to extend the reach of VDSL is the upstream becomes worse than on ADSL.

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend from $150 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

coffeebaron: The big problem as they try to extend the reach of VDSL is the upstream becomes worse than on ADSL.

Depends on a ton of metrics, ADSL upload compared to VDSL US0 can actually be very close to identical.

Take for example my lines.

VDSL 23/1.13 (only using US0)

ADSL 16/1.24

PSD on US0 limits power a tad.

Now if chorus were to use vectoring on that, i'd suspect we would see minor gains.

Overall the 15dB couldn't be totally lifted. in say rural areas, it would be easy for them to do say... 20dB and still be great.

In highly dense urban areas, there will still be a loss seen.

Hi team,

I've downgraded the Draytek Firmware from "3.8.2_modem8" to "3.8.2_modem4".

Unfortunately, there's no improvement in speed. It's got me stumped ... anyone got a Draytek Vigor 130 set up for Vodafone VDSL so I can compare configurations with?

Regards

a change of firmware may not change things.

even if it does, it may be at an underlaying level. say, a reduction in error rates where ddDLM will over time decide to trend power levels upwards..
