Is LAN one of the options for VoIP bound interface? If you are having trouble configuring the WAN port to be untagged one way could be to bypass the WAN port just connect the ERL to one of the NF4V LAN ports and make sure LAN IP/DNS settings are configured.

 

 

You need to check whether the NF4V itself has internet access, it doesn't look like there is a ping facility in the web GUI but there should be through TELNET. Or you could check the route table has a path to the internet under the Device Info menu.

Hah, dog with a bone, gone past Pumkin hour should be in my fart sack but here I am making NF4V VOIP work behind an ERL3 (not a switch in site)

 

NF4V WAN port into ERL3 eth2 port
Factory default settings (ie DHCP enabled etc)
192.168.20.1 NF4V GUI
Layer2 Interface
ETH Interface
eth4/eth4
Apply/save

 

WAN Service
IP over Ethernet
Next page just leave as is, with obtain address automatically..., Next
Nest page just leave as is, Enable NAT..., Next
Next
Next
Apply/Save

 

With VOIP
Basic Settings
Bound Interface Name: Eth4.1 or 'Any WAN' both work
Set the rest as per ISP

 

You have double NAT and routing happening but if your VOIP works and thats all your using on the NF4V you should be good to go.

 

Any problems call me via VOIP :)

ytiz - it does have a PING utility via the web GUI and I've used that to check out connectivity and DNS resolution.

 

I'll try a LAN port instead as suggested and see what difference that makes.

The NF4V will show its connected to the Internet with the LED
Thats how I was able to make progress yesterday in getting it to work as above

Yitz - I couldn't make it through the lan port, as I wasn't able to configure routing/dns resolution via the LAN side of the router.

 

freakngeek - When using the WAN interface, I've found the internet LED is on regardless of which configuration I use - either with or with the switch in between the ERL and NFV4.  Its just the phone LED that goes out when I remove the switch.  And that fits as I can ping voice.orcon.net.nz from the NFV4 in both situations.

Have you tried the above ?
I got VOIP working with the VF4V behind a ERL3
NF4V was using its WAN port, but using any of the LAN ports should also work

 

Did after wards turn off DHCP and VOIP still worked, router was still accessible
Could probably do more to make more like an AP but not reason I bought it

Yes, I tried that set up.  It works fine if I put a switch between the ERL and the NFV4.  It doesn't when I remove the switch.

 


Internet LED is on, ping, dns and web browsing is all good.  Just the VOIP connection is lost.  

 

 

 

So weird.

Odd how I can make it work with no switch

 

Any WAN out Firewall rules on the ERL3 ?

 

I'm kinda running out of ideas
Probably some simple thing we'll kick our selves for.

 

But for VOIP there are better solutions out there
Get a FB7x90, it does it so much better, its what I use for my VOIP, using my old DECT phones.
I bought the NF4V as toy to try out VDSL with broadcom chipset, probably all its really good for
As a modem its probably OK (not tried yet), but its Bridging ability is pretty naff
It will probably get added to my pile of bits in the garage

Explain why you chose a tagged port, eth4.1, rather than eth4??

That's what it was called when I recreated the interface (after deleting the existing one that had VLAN 10 configured).

 

 

 

I added an "ETH Interface" and it was called "eth4/eth4".

 

 

 

Then when I created the "WAN Service" interface the router called it eth4.1

 

I did get an option to specify tagging but chose the untagged options:

A pictorial of how I setup nf4v on eth2 on ERL3

 

nf4v factory reset
I setup via a LAN cable on ETH1 on nf4v, using default 192.168.20.1
I setup all ISP VOIP settings first, I left 'Advanced' alone, only setup 'basic',

NOTHING else was changed on nf4v, you can fiddle with this later if you can get VOIP to work
ERL3 eth2 port used, this has DHCP enabled, but nf4v also still has this on, but doesn't matter as long as VOIP works

 

I hope this helps, the above produced on nf4v via ERL3

 

 

 

EDIT- got one piccy wrong now all fixed
EDIT II - added my VOIP settings

I've tried following the same settings where possible (mines an Orcon variant of NF4V so it has some minor differences).  

 

Unfortunately, I ended up in the same place.  VOIP works fine if I connect a switch between the ERL and NFV4.  Otherwise, the Voice Status stays "down".

 

I'm admitting defeat at this point and will leave a switch in between the two.

If you want to see the packets to be able to work out what the problem is, you can do that on the ERL by using tcpdump or tshark to capture the packets, then copy the file over ssh using scp to a PC that has Wireshark, and use that to display the packets.  Make sure you write the packet capture file to the ERL ramdisk (/var/log is good place).  If you store the packets to the internal USB stick, it does too many write cycles and will die rapidly.  Being able to do things like this is one of the reasons for having a good router like an ERL.

That sounds like the switch is stipping the vlan tagging...

 

 

 

Are you sure you have set the interface as untagged for voice? (or as an alternative just untag it on the ELRA)

If the switch is stripping tag then it doesn't need one to work (which makes sense), but why is tag still there ?
How is the eth port setup on the ERL3  that NV4V is plugged into ?
How have you setup VLAN10 on the ERL3, normally only on pppoe is it needed, then it removes tag on way in

 

My tag gets removed with the modem (DV130), but if I pass the tag on, then I would setup the tag on ERL3 pppoe (not WAN eth port)

 

Could do with a piccy of the ERL3 main GUI page to have a look at
