Tearing my hair our over this one.

I have a fairly normal setup at home.  Unlimited fibre from VF with static IP connected via a WRT1900AC with latest firmware (  Ive tried both a DSL4320 and the VF router in problem solving.  Behind that is a domain served by an install of Server2012R2 Essentials ( which provides the DNS and DHCP.  It all works great on the wired five PC's and multiple other devices on WiFi.

When I start the Epic Launcher on any PC all the PC's lose connection to the internet.  WiFi (non-domain) devices are fine, and can surf fine.  No error lights on the modem.  Cant access the server via remote desktop.  I've tried giving a PC a static address and the google DNS, or the router DNS but no dice.  There are no errors in the logs of the DNS on the server.

I have googled extensively and no solution is out thee, but other have opined its a DNS issue of some kind.

Would value any insights.

Regards Ivan

It is probably to do with you running the DNS and DHCP on a different IP than your gateway IP.

When the computers loose internet access, do they still have valid IP addresses, gateway, and DNS addresses assigned?

I had to Google what epic launcher is. Since it is gaming related, it is probably making its own networking changes in the background, which is probably what is killing your connection.

Also I wouldn't call hosting DNS and DHCP on a separate server, a fairly normal home setup. If you want to keep doing things like that, you will probably need a fully configurable router such as a Ubiquity edge router or a Mikrotic. Instead of trying to make a consumer grade router do something that it is not designed to do.

Thanks for this.  Yes they still have valid IP addresses and DNS, but the server is nixed.  Is there any particular advantage in running the DNS and DHCP from the server?  Apart from DHCP reservations I've not really used the functionality the DHCP and DNS role undoubtedly have.

Why do you have DNS and DHCP on a separate server? Content filtering or something else?

Also did you check that the gateway address is still correct on the computers?

You say non domain devices are fine, are they getting different dns server records to domain devices, is epic launcher flooding dns requests and your local domain controller is loosithe plot?

By the way there are quite a number of complaints of this with this game on Reddit, seems the developers don't give a flying f### glad I have no interest in gaming, seems like a bit of the wild. West in regards to network stack usage.

Is this a problem when the launcher is open or actually downloading?

Thanks for the input

It dies as the launcher boots.  Kills all the internet in the house.

To diagnose I've removed the DNS and DHCP roles from the server, and let the router do DHCP and pointed the DNS on the pc's to the router and google.  Ive turned off the server.  Ive turned off all other PC's on the network, and tried on both gaming pc's.  Ive turned off the Fingbox.  Ive killed all processes that look internetish (Killer NIC, Razer, Citrix receiver).

Still whenever I launch Epic Launcher my PC loses internet connection.

I actually don't know what else I can do.  This is driving me crazy.

Cheers Ivan

Does the router log show anything when it happens? Friend was having issues with some gaming app and it was the DOS protection of their router thinking that things happening were bad things happening and killing things from happening.
