Have found a mr18 AP at cash converters for $20, can these be run in a single ap mode without a licence, or would I need to put openwrt on it?

They're 802.11n access points with not a great data throughput.

IIRC - you can get OpenWRT on it, but don't expect anything great from them.

Cheers Guys, thank you for the heads up on the units drawbacks. However for $20 is a steal in your honest opinions?

Not at all... You can get a HG659 for cheaper than that on Trademe which does Wireless AC.

If you work in an IT role you can get a free Cisco Meraki AP: https://meraki.cisco.com/tc/freeap which is likely where this MR18 came from. I had one and found it really wasn't great.
