Just follow the recommended Microsoft prodedure … it shows how to do it at certain stage. I‘d recomment to link the susipicious computer with a temporarily ethernet cable to the router.

Thanks, tried this but it said the latest driver was already installed?

The "latest" driver from is dated 2015: https://www.asus.com/nz/networking-iot-servers/adapters/all-series/pcen15/helpdesk_download?model2Name=PCEN15

Download it and run the installer.

Thanks, tried this as well and it did appear to update. I got optimistic when it said it was updating...but still can't see the network 😕

I think I'm just going to give up - he has a connection for now, and I think I'll just look into getting him a 5Ghz-compatible wifi dongle to use on the back of his machine, this is starting to get too frustrating!

If it is the latest, proceed with the latest until the tool‘s analysis is completed. Let‘s hope, that it can solve the problem.

Peter Reader told me OP's motherboard is likely to be Gigabyte B550M DS3H AC mATX Motherboard For AMD Ryzen 5000 Series CPUs Socket AM4 with AC referring to onboard wifi. Probably a Realtek driver issue.

Just ran Belarc on his machine and you're right, it shows the following info:

Board: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. PRIME B550M-K ARGB Rev X.0x

CPU: 3.70 gigahertz AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core

Onboard wifi reports as: ASUS PCE-N15 11n Wireless LAN PCI-E Card

So with this in mind, is it just a case of updating the driver for the on-motherboard wifi and he should be good to go? How do you do this in Windows 11? (I'm a bit of a noob with it 😕)

How did your old post on your computer build go from saying you'd bought a Gigabyte MB to having an AsusTek board?

Apparently the old CPU couldn't be removed from the motherboard, so they ended up having to replace them both (this was what his mother told me, as explained to her by PB Tech).

Your additional info about the MB didn't show up. Intel did publish this for some of their wifi chipsets.

"Depending on the Wi-Fi driver version used, Intel® Wireless Adapters supporting 802.11ac may not show Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) networks in their scan lists, and as a result, might not be able to connect to Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) capable wireless routers and access points, even at 802.11ac speeds.

Does the Smart Modem allow turning off the ax mode in wifi type?

I just realised I didn't try this suggestion. I'll give this a go and see if it makes any difference.

So that's a very old card (as per drivers, 2015 or earlier). 802.11n means 2.4 GHz only.

No, I don't think so. But I wasn't 100% involved with the upgrade - like I said, his mother paid for it as his Christmas present. So it is entirely possible the previous onboard wifi (from 2018) was simply transferred to the new machine, which would explain a few things.

In any case, I think I've done what I can with this for now, and will just look at getting him a wifi dongle that supports 5Ghz and install that on his machine.

Don't know the specs of the specific card the OP has, but 802.11n can be either 2.4 or 5GHz. Is was the first wifi standard that could use either frequency.
