Gordy7:

Step daughter chopped through her fibre cable just inside the boundary. Similar to OP situation.

2degrees/Chorus repaired the cable pretty quickly. Edit - never got charged.

Don't know how the join was fixed.

We had a second line installed years ago for Internet connectivity. It wasn't buried properly and ran through the garden. When it eventually got chopped, we didn't pay a cent to repair it, nor should anyone who accidentally breaks the fibre when the installation is so shoddy.

That must be one powerful spade, that Microduct is pretty strong stuff

I don’t think so, every time I have asked for a sample from a chorus tech on several installs they refuse.

i have seen them bury these only mm deep so wont take much.

This is the issue. In ground installs are at the surface. Are there no standards about cover depth?

"Chorus’ fibre-optic cables should be buried at least 200mm deep in rugged polyethylene tubes that are designed to withstand “multiple strikes with a spade or fork”, " from Stuff article.

That might work for a shovel but many gardeners keep a sharp edge on spades. Chopping through roots is a normal thing spades are used for.

In this case the nearness to the old copper pillar might have made a cautious approach wiser. Where was the green Chorus boundary tag?

I did take a couple of photos, for the sake of posterity, but they dont really show the real scope of things.

Thats the boundary, and the cable is quite shallow there. Maybe 2 inches deep at most.

Close up doesnt show the depth at all, but a nice clean one and done slice through.

When the cable was laid by Chorus they used a chainsaw like thing to make a groove in the ground. Its about 100m from the boundary to the ONT.

I have to ask why you thought digging that close to the plinth with a shovel was a good idea to start with?

A sharp Spade will slice right through that microduct!

As per Chorus Guide lines it should be minimum 400mm Deep.

But they claim that it doesnt apply to fiber and they apparently re Wrote the Regs on the Depth that it needs to be installed!

In my books thats a Crappy install and you are not liable.
