Help! I have a simple 2 computer network at home sharing an ADSL router/4-port +wireless switch, currently not using wireless. Lately, when I am attempting to download a file (such as the ITunes update), the download will stop (freezing where it is) and the internet connectivity from that computer can only be fixed with a reboot. The other comptuer in teh house continues to work fine.

Downlaods (and heavy traffic apps such as youtube) have the same problem on bothg computers. I called the Xtra Help Desk and they found nothing wrong, even told me I had a fast connection. I have a hard wired ADSL splitter in the house (as I have a monitored burglar alarm and Sky).

The Xtra Tech suggested there was a problem on the actual computer. I have since done an OS reload (clean build) on one of the computers and while it is running quicker now (there was a lot of rubbish on it) the download problem still occurs. Both computers running Windows XP Home SP3.

I have also swapped out my ADSL Router/Modem from the 6-year old PureTek to the Thomson Model that Telecom are issuing, no difference, although I had been emaning to do this for a while as this old one needed constant rebooting.

Do you have the latest drivers for your NIC's? Have you changed to wireless and still had the same problem?

Same problem with Wireless, my NICS are on board so will need to dig out my manuals to see where thay are sourced from.

Hmm he said he had the same problem with both the Thompson and and older Puretek modem/router he has.


I'd probably double check the machines don't have a virus/malware with Microsoft Security Essentials and Malware Bytes.


If that doesn't turn up anything a process of elimination perhaps... 


Unplug everything from every phone jack leaving only the new modem/router connected, hook up a single machine to the modem/router do you still get the problem?


Try a linux live boot cd on that machine, still get the problem? etc

I finally got around to unplugging everything and guess what, when I unplug the alarm monitoring connection, both my phone and ADSL die! I have a hard wired splitter and filter and it appears the alarm tech has patched into the phone connection before the splitter. I will get him around to change the connection. Does this eman that when the alarm sytem is polled that would kill my ADSL connection?

An alarm needs to be hooked in after the splitter. If it's hooked in before it will be the cause of ADSL drops every time it grabs the line.

raytaylor: I would say its probably the modem.

If rebooting the computer fixed the problem then that computer may be faulty. If you are sure there is no virus then I would try plugging in a new network card. But do check for viruses because the Wifi should not have the same problem if its a hardware issue (unless its a problem with the motherboard).

Also check that you are using the correct ADSL jackpoint, there should be only 1 jack that isnt filtered. All the phone jacks should go through the alarm and filter, so the ADSL jack is dedicated for the ADSL modem and doesnt have any phone.
