I've been googling this problem for an hour and I found this forum..  I see it's an NZ forum and I live in America but I hope someone can help me out anyway.

I go to a chatroom often.  My sibling made their own username and logged on to harass people (being an internet troll).  I did not think it would reflect upon me.  His account was banned, deleted.  Now I cannot get onto the site at all.  I went to a proxy server and it went to the website, and I was able to log in and check my emails but I was not able to get on the chat.

My husband said it's because they blocked our DNS.  He said they refresh every 24 hours and I should be able to get on then?

Is this true?  I don't know anything about DNS.  And I don't understand why, if our DNS was blocked, why I could log onto the site on a proxy server, just not the chat.  And the  chat is not down for maintenance because 5 of my chat friends on my yahoo messenger told me they were in there just fine.

How do I solve this problem?  Will be so grateful to whoever can help me.  Thank you.  :)

They would have blocked your IP address instead of your DNS... Try un-plugging and re-plugging in your modem (assuming cable/DSL) to renew your IP address with your ISP. Hopefully you will be issued with a new one. If you have a static IP (as with most cable) you will need to use a proxy or ask your ISP for a new IP.

I would say your IP address has been blocked - if you are on a static IP, this never changes, so you can only get around the ban by using an alternate internet connection.  If you have a dynamic IP, reboot your modem, this should give you a new address.

The most straightforward way to figure out which you have (static/dynamic) is check your last bill - if this mentions a static IP, you have one - no mention, and you are on dynamic.

An IP address is like your home address - everyone on the internet has one, and it is unique to your internet connection.  When you posted here, I (as a mod) can see what IP address you posted from.

Hope this helps.

I think what they will have blocked is your IP address. Depending on your internet service, you may have a fixed IP address or a dynamic IP address that can change.

If you have a fixed IP address, then your only recourse would probably be to contact the website/chat forum you are having issues with, from a friends computer (not connected to your system) via email and explain the circumstances.

If you have a dynamic IP address, then switch off your ADSL (DSL in USA) modem for an hour of so and then switch it back on, with luck, you will have a new IP address allocations by your internet company and you will be able to use the website/chat forum you are currently having issues with.

If you have a cable modem (in the USA) then it is highly likely you have a fixed IP address.

They may have also banned/blocked anyone from joining the chatroom by username. This would have been based on IP address, anyone who has shared your IP address may have been banned.

If the above solution does not work, then send the admin of the site you go to an email/PM and explain your situation.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the help very much! I turned the modem off and turned it back on and that didn't do the trick, so when I go to bed in a few minutes, I'll turn it off and keep it off until the morning. Failing that, I guess I'll have to contact the admin of the site. We have DSL and my husband says we have a dynamic IP. He's a computer repairman but he has not been able to help me with this problem so I turned to this website. I could not find anything on the internet about websites blocking people DNS like he said (so maybe he's better at the installing OS' and hardware part of it. The internet part, maybe not so much.)

So yup, I have DSL and a dynamic IP to clear that part up.

Lot of ISPs these days give you a "dynamic" IP but it dosent get changed just by a disconnection.
Orcon do it.... extremely rarely does a home user get a new IP. Even Orcon CSR's themselves have said its not a static, its just easier.........

What do you recommend I do? Shoud I beg the admin of the website to unban me and explain the circumstances? Is there anything else I could do? This sucks :(

It only sucks because of the actions of your sibling !

If restarting your ADSL modem does not solve the problem with your ISP allocating a new IP address, then you have two possible solutions, contact your internet company and request they manually allocate a new IP address or contact the website/forum explaining the circumstances. Don't be surprised if the website/forum refuses to "un-ban" you, after all they only have your word that it was not you that was responsible.

I agree, Kiwiscoota, I will never let him use my computer again. I'll definitely do both things you suggested, and I appreciate it very much! I also considered the fact that the admin might not believe what I had to say. It does sound like a "dog ate my homework" excuse, but unfortunately it's true. I hope I can get this resolved and I appreciate all of your help very much. Thank you! :)
