I have two laptops, one running Vista the other Windows 7. Whenever I restart the one using Vista I have to restart my wireless modem because I can only get limited internet access. It comes up with  "Limited or No Connectivity". When I try to open a webpage it won't load, saying I have no connection and to try again. This doesn't happen with my laptop running win 7.

It seems vista is defaulting to public access, is there anyway to change this so I don't have to keep changing the settings or restarting the modem?

Do you have any proxy settings on your Vista laptop?

Unsure. I used to use Telstra cable modem and worked fine but have had to change to Telecom and started after setting up the wireless modem.

Which Internet browser are you using on the Vista laptop?

Mozilla. Have Explorer on it but never use it.

OK.

It depends on how Firefox is set up, but go into Internet Explorer, go to Tools --> Internet Options --> Connections --> LAN Settings. Make sure the checkbox "Automatically detect settings" is ticked, and make sure all the other check boxes are unticked.

Does that help?

I doubt very much whether it has anything to do with your browser or proxy settings.

I would be surprised if it is not your PCs authentication with the router which is at fault. This could be due to a number of different reasons - router side or PC side.

It seems like your PC is not receiving an IP address on your network - you could check in the routers menu as to whether the PC has been allocated an IP address by your router.

Assuming there isn't any problem with the wireless signal you then need to check all authentication settings, and then address allocation etc... Sorry I don't have time to explain further steps at present but there should be a number of self-help articles available on the internet.

If you really think it is the browser you could see whether a program like Skype has connectivity but given the error message you quote I would really doubt it.

I have had this happen several times with various vista machines.

I had resolved it by doing updates on the wireless network cards. Fixed 5 out of 6 of the vista machines.
