Hey guys,
We are opening a new branch office in Albany (around 6 staff) and I'm after a wall mount cabinet to mount:
  • 2x 19" short depth rack servers with a depth of 354mm (so make that 400mm including cables)
  • 1x 19" switch (similar depth)
  • 1x cat5e patch panel
  • 1x cable management bar
  • Small Dynamix UPS
  • VDSL Modem
  • 19" power board
So probably looking at around 9RU
At our other offices we have the 18RU Dynamix Swing Mount cabinet. They are great so was looking at the 9RU but its amazingly expensive:

Should i go for it or are there more cost effective options? Also seem to remember the supplier for these is somewhere in Albany so may be better to approach them direct.

Yep the supplier is in Albany, and I'm sure you can get some much better ones. Watch that you have enough air extraction from the back of the cabinet if you are putting servers in it, I believe that cabinet should have a fan tray in it.

Avoid the Dynamix UPS like the plague, I have seen too many of them fail without any obvious reason. APC have some quite cheap models these days and even the cheap ones are fairly reliable.

Jaycar has a 9RU for $265 if you wanted that?

should be a fan hole in the rear for an 8cm fan, but if you were running a server on any of the cases/above ones, I'd cut out one or two 120mm fan holes and use two of them instead. Since they'd be quieter with more air flow

Or if you wanted one to match the Dynamix one you already have:
$421 incl shipping from Notebook city

Oh cool - that's right CDL. Will give them a call tomorrow. I suspect they supply Ascent, Notebook City etc. (well I know they supply Ascent at least) with Dynamix cabinets so will check if they can sharpen their prices.

Cooling wise the servers will be running Atom chips so no worries on that front. The Dynamix cabinets have 230v 12cm fans in the top anyway. TBH I have cabinets which have Xeon socket 1155 CPUs and they are fine heat wise. So I think those extractor fans, allthough slow do the job.

And didn't know Dynamix was so bad. Their entry level UPS is pretty cheap though =p

I have had 1 and know 2 people who have had dynamix UPS's - Got so hot and smoked that the case started to distort and discolour - seems they have no or incorrect fusing in the battery connection and something happens and it just shorts and smokes.

Did yours have spectacular failure or just stop working?

And the Dynamics UPS can also just go into alarm whenever there is a brief surge or outage (like half a second), cutting off the power instead of keeping it going. Might as well just use a good surge protector without battery.

have a look at the dynamix 12U cabinet. We dont bother with the 9's because of the price, 12's are cheaper. And you always want more space in your cabinet ;)

These cabinets are interesting and appear to be locally made.

Its all in the battery, and keeping them cal-liberated. They come with crappy batteries, but the replacement ones that CDL are selling are pretty good.
