Doesn't look like you could attach a USB HDD

It's a DLNA/UPNP renderer, so you'd use a server of some sort (could be running on a smartphone or PC) to stream movies to it

Yep, that device lets you stream from DLNA devices or Android/iPhone with the appropriate app.  Not play directly.

Thanks. So if I have a tablet that can play movies from a USB harddrive, this dongle will allow me to stream it to the TV?
That's good too.

Anyone seen these type of gadgets in the shops in NZ yet?

Yes, that should work.  I use Bubble UPNP app on an android phone and can stream locally stored movies or those from a NAS to a DLNA renderer like a smart TV

I've never seen these before but could be a cheap and easy way to give a dumb TV some DLNA capability

Let us know how well it works
