We put in heat pumps when my son was just a toddler. Three in total - one in the rumpus upstairs, one in my son's room downstairs, and one in the downstairs living room. We heated the house much more effectively and often than with the previously-used single oil column heater, and our power bill was no higher. Also the place was much drier - they made the DVS optional. As a whole-house solution it's excellent and of course good for cooling in the summer too. But if you just want to warm one small room, I think an oil column heater (radiator) would be suitable. If I remember correctly, they work out more economical in situations where they are on for long periods of time, because once the oil heats up, it just needs to be maintained. Don't quote me on that, though :o)
