I see the Sony store has the MDR-1000x on sale...only the cream version though but at 30% off is a bloody good deal.

MDR-1000x

Good spot and a great deal @$489.

Great, I see this today, and the sale price is already over! Though, TBH, I don't think I could have lived with the cream anyway.

I went in to JB yesterday to see if they have them in stock yet, but no luck. Any further advance on when they may become more readily available? I'm not willing to pay $700 for them when they do, so hope they'll come down to something more affordable with a "mate's rate" sale or similar. I'd also like to have a listen to them before spending that sort of money.

Can anyone who owns either the QC35s or MDR-1000Xs say how they find them for transmitting the sound of footsteps? I've got a pair of Focus (non-NC) headphones that just amplify my footsteps when walking on footpaths, and I'd hoped to ensure any new phones don't do this. It's a bit hard to check this out in-store!

I have a QC35.

Yes they do transmit the footstep noise but not to an annoying level as my other M10 from BlackBox.

I do have an Audio Technica ATH-ANC33Is noise cancelling earbuds but they are worse than ones that cup the ear.

But again I normally listen seated.  Hope that was helpful.

LionBlitzz:

So I have a 17:30 hr non stop flight to Dubai and obviously I can not stand the horrible quality of complimentary headphones. I am looking for NC headphones which won't break my bank account. I am okay with used headphones as long as they are well maintained. My budget is upto $350.

Obvious contendars are Bose QC 25, 35, Sony MDR-1000, AT ANC9, Sennheiser MM-550x. But I have heard that Bose has horrendous sound quality and the rest of NC headphones have dissapointing NC, lol.

Any suggestions?

Thanks so much!

PS:

Headphones I have:

1. Sennheiser RS 160

2. Sennheiser HD 202

3. Audio Technica ATH-m50

It's depends on your frame of reference and they type of music you enjoy.

I have the bose noise cancelling and think they sound great. Sure, you get a bit of the NC hiss but it is minimal.

I just ordered the wireless Sony noice cancelling set which were on special over the weekend, which is great as all 3 kids now have NC for the long car / plane trips. No more fighting. Woohoo. I might even get a turn too.

Thanks for letting me know; I think in the end that testing them out myself will be the only way to be sure! My nephew's got a pair of 35s, so I'll try his next time I see him. I've also got a pair of M10s and haven't ever worn them walking - I just can't get used to cables in those circumstances! Perhaps I should try them out - certainly a cheaper option, and given I'm primarily listening to podcasts sound quality isn't a huge concern.

Here's a pair of the Sony MDR-1000Xs at a bargain basement price - where do people get off charging these sorts of prices?

http://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography/home-audio/headphones/auction-1315452407.htm

Wouldn't be any point asking him as I'm sure I'd be in trouble: "Leaving negative comment or inappropriate comment will get your trademe act blacklisted"

Yep, loved that touch! Also, the goods apparently won't be ready for shipping or pick-up until 30 May.

And the guy must work pretty high up in Trademe, since he/she/it/they apparently has the power to get "your trademe act [sic] blacklisted". LOL.

Still, God loves a trier, and a fool and his money are soon parted - so perhaps some sucker will hit buy now without engaging a brain cell.

That seller has a lot of products all with the same message. I'm guessing they're tied up with some sort of parallel import or drop shipping business.

Some of their prices are crazy - who'd pay $70 + shipping for a 4pk of Gilette razor blades? http://www.trademe.co.nz/health-beauty/shaving-hair-removal/disposable-razors/auction-1314898068.htm

You'd have to wonder if there's a laundry operation going on, with those prices. The script on those razors looks like it's from Thailand. Actually, at those prices, you'd think they're just going down the the Warehouse and buying stuff at retail then shipping it. The fact you have to wait a month is just beyond bizzarre.

OK. Back on topic. yesterday, I was sitting next to a guy on a regional Air NZ flight who had Bose Quiet Comfort 35's. Sitting as I was, enjoying my Sennheiser PXC550's, I was tempted to do a little in-flight comparison, but he was wrapped up in the movie on his iPad. Perhaps next time.

Yeah, I am happy with mine for the NZ$500 or so I paid, but they are not worth $700 IMHO!

I don't fly much but wanted some noise-canceling headphones that would block enough noise that I didn't need to crank the movie up to crazy volumes.

Couldn't see the need for bluetooth when I'm stuck in a chair for the duration

The Sony MDR-10RNC (when on sale) seemed like the right pair for me. Good reviews on Amazon compared to other noise canceling phones.

Much nicer looking than a Blackbox (aka Audio-technica) or Plantronics. Seemingly good build quality. Probably just "good" for listening to music. Keen to try out the noise-canceling sometime soon!

Got a nice surprise yesterday. JB Hi-fi had their friends and family deal on (cost + gst) Went in an inquired on the price of the MDR-1000x

$380 smile. Picked one up quick smart although there were heaps on the shelf. Definitely recommend keeping an eye on their next cost + gst sale.
