Also following with some interest. What options are there for locally bought / proper English firmware? Assuming Aliexpress and delivery at the moment is probably a long shot!

ANglEAUT:

What about browser plug-ins & cross platform compatibility?

All three of these listed below seem to require some IE specific plugin

Are they usable on Mac or Linux & in other browsers?

Latest Dahua firmware has switched away from plugins given most browsers not supporting them anymore. No plugin needed for streaming.
This is on the Dahua OEM cameras and latest firmware from Andy at Empire Tech on AliExpress.

Older Dahuas required some sort of ActiveX control or something similar for IE, but I've never actually used the web interface for anything other than the initial config, there's an Android app that gives you everything you need. Newer Dahuas AFAIK use HTML5 video.

You'd need to do your own research on local sources - there are a number, but you'll find lots of security distributors will only resell to licenced security installers. Viewtech might.

There are still settings that can only be configured from the NVR GUI or camera GUI which is kind of annoying - even SmartPSS can't give you full control over some things such as IVS.

I'm looking at install some cameras around my property too, so I'll be following this with interest.

What method of recording were you going for? Cloud based/SD Card storage/ NVR?

I use Dahua cameras and cloud storage via an always on small computer.

So if somone cleans out my house, I have the snap shots stored off site.

1.. Camera motion snap shots using FTP...

2.. FileZilla to capture the FTP snap shots to a folder on the computer.

3.. Onedrive sync or Google sync to upload the the snap shots to the cloud... depending on where you have available cloud storage.

Sure, but for the few bits of initial config that do need the video, e.g. motion-detection regions and sensitivity, you can find some Windows device and use IE. Once it's done you don't really need to touch it again.

No thanks. I prefer not to. I also know that I will be fiddling often.
