Looking at that dc rainmaker article, there are some type of smart device that have no offline method.  One thing I don't like it that the 9/10 the garmin connect software wont even load on my phone, it just crashes.  It should be able to work in an offline mode, and a, show the status of the garmin services....and b, be able to at least back up my watch to the phone (so a fit file is on watch and phone).

Next step, I'd prefer that the watch was smart enough to be able to send a fit file places....it's has it's own wifi connection, and/or bluetooth it should be able to send at least via email out either of those connections.

Yeah I'd be pretty annoyed if I had one of those.

My watch seems to work OK currently for all the stuff I do on the watch (and still seems to be recording workouts without issue, notifications, HRM monitoring, etc etc all seem to work - I haven't yet tried the workarounds to manually sync workout data to strava though) - The Connect app starts OK on phone but shows a "down for maintenance" message - and I can't seem to do much with it... though it does still show notifications on watch etc so some things still seem to work through it.

Yeh my app just crashes....sometimes it gets in and has that message.  I just manually uploaded some activities to Strava this morning....I always did prefer having a feed to mulitple sites, just in case....

Their latest public statement suggests that they have 'no reason to believe' that data has been leaked to the hackers, but that doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

If they are correct in their allusion that user data is secure then it will be a major embarrassment but it will eventually be forgotten.

If, on the other hand, user data has been leaked then the implications will be huge. There will be very expensive lawsuits and widespread consumer backlash that will have a profound impact on the company. Would they even survive it?

I think this is about pure financial extortion,  whether data has been taken is secondary....

Apparently the hackers want $10 million to release the servers,,,,

Garmin are listed on the NASDAQ and are due to release second-quarter results on Wednesday (US Time)...  The market will punish them if they can't make this announcement or provide a good progress report...

The hackers might have even taken out some short selling options to increase their payour...

I feel the same. I switched from an Apple Watch because I believed that the Garmin product was more robust and utilitarian. I am watching this situation with great interest because it will inform whether I stick with Garmin long term, or whether I seriously consider the next generation Apple watch.

For me they are 2 different devices that fill 2 different (but slightly overlapping) areas. For me the Garmin will always win for anything fitness related and the metrics that come out of it when combined with a HR monitor or running dynamics pod cannot be beaten. I guess it depends on your usage situation.

Having owned both products I completely agree with you. The Garmin suits my use case better, so I hope they sort this out without any long term implications for the reliability of the product.

I am doing the Taupo half on Sunday, so I will be annoyed if it's not resolved by then.

Are you on iPhone or Samsung?

I have an iPhone XS Max and haven't experienced any crashing. In fact, the app syncs still to my device fine but it's not showing any stats other than step count, floors climbed and calories burned.

I'm on android 9 and similar experience - Connect doesn't crash at all and syncs steps, floors and calories ok, but not much else.

iphone 7.  I think in the past 2 days, I've got into the app twice to see the outage banner.  Every other time it crashes at the little running man.

Android 10 here, haven't had the app crash at all and have synced a few activities during the outage.

I know it's first world problems, but three days is a long time for Garmin's wearables user base to be stuck with effectively crippled devices, and who knows how much longer it might go on for.

Bunnie Huang has a workaround, at least for some Garmin devices.

It looks like service is starting to be restored, as per Garmin's latest status update. I am seeing a bit more data in the Connect app, but I am still getting 'out of service' messages if I try to navigate through the app.

I'm sure I saw a notification they had.

Yeah, and apparently that could get them in trouble with the US government who have the hacker group listed as an organisation that US citizens/corporations cannot have financial dealings with....

There are going to be a lot of questions asked over the coming weeks. Did they pay the ransom and, if so, what are the implications of that? If they paid the ransom, does that suggest they were under-prepared for an attack of this nature? Could they have done more to prevent it in the first place? How can they be so sure that customer data is safe?

Garmin's communication so far has been opaque, and it's unclear whether that's just poor communication or whether they're hiding something.
