The only bugger is that I forgot to buy a bird deterrent attachment...probably should have done that....might be seeing a lot of rain with birds sitting on it. :-(

The Davis stations come with these but I've never needed them despite this place having an overabundance of birds. You may be worrying about nothing.

Same here. No problem with birds on the Tempest.

Cool....might get away with not having bird spikes then...that would be good. Nuts how adding the bird spikes makes the shipping cost so much more expensive given it isn't big and weighs next to nothing.

As to installing on the roof that's a good point. My roof is a very light colour but on a calm day there'll definitely be reflection so that would interfere....and I'm not keen to put way above the roof to mitigate that....I want a weather station, not a lightning rod. So back to the drawing board....whatever I come up with now won't be super high....and it's going to be pretty sheltered....because we've got quite the established garden....

I have my Tempest small base screwed direct to the roof. (With RTV under it to waterproof screw hole and stop anything turning).

As it is on the top of a standard rectangle gable roof, any heat reflection is away from it. Have Tempest plus 2 other stations here.... wind direction, temperature, humidity etc always agree.

I must be lucky?

Mine is a hip and valley roof. The sky dish is near the ridge line so in the middle of the roof. I'd be fine for everything except temperature of roof reflection is significant. I looked around today... Almost everything else is either too sheltered, or worse, reasonable but in reach of a wisteria which would strangle the weather station in a matter of weeks.

The only other place that would be utterly ideal is on the lamp post outside our house.... But I can't imagine I'd get permission for that!

Yesterday I just got a link from Weatherflow offering a 'trial run' to ship to NZ. I jumped at the offer.....so should be here in a week or so. The only bugger is that I forgot to buy a bird deterrent attachment...probably should have done that....might be seeing a lot of rain with birds sitting on it. :-(

So...if anyone else happens to be buying one...don't make the same mistake. Now I'll have to wait to see if I actually needed one (Murphy's law says yes) and then see how crazy expensive it is to just ship the spikes. If I was doing it again I would just have got it US$7 regardless as the shipping is free since it's coming with the meter itself... hindsight is always 20/20.

Of course if this advice turned out to be helpful for you....then you could always considering importing a spare deterrent one for me....It's so cheap that I don't think you'd be risking much in the case it turned out I wasn't good for a $20 debt.  ;-0

bugger... I didn't see that signup link on the website...I'll have to wait

Yup. But there is an option to be notified when it is available for shipping to NZ. I signed up to that a few months back so they've clearly picked some random people to try the shipping process. I suggest you sign up too and then wait to see when they do further trials or open it up for general supply.

They look really cool but just one query about it. It appears that the solar panels are only on the southern side of the unit, to match what is best for the Northern hemisphere. Is this still the case for the units shipping to NZ or have they moved them to the Northern side of the unit? If it is only on the southern side then how is the battery charge at the moment with the short days?

Mount it with the solar panels facing north, then once you set the GPS Co-ordinates in the App....it knows you are in the southern hemisphere and makes the necessary changes :-)

My Tempest was ordered on the 28th and arrived this morning (via UPS).

Install was almost too easy - have temporary attached it to the fence. Purchased a mount for it (https://www.gowifi.co.nz/ubiquitinetworks/ub-am.html) so will mount it properly once that arrives.

Edit: Don't order that as a mount, it is too big.

Mine ( ordered 30 July, UPS) was "delivered" as well, unfortunately I'm at a rural address so it has been dropped off to Aramex (Fastways) for delivery, who will then drop it off to the Rural Post delivery depot, so if I'm lucky actual delivery tomorrow, otherwise next week.

Mine is still "on the way" due by end of Tuesday next week. I'm still pondering a roof install.....there's just so few other locations that would work......
