I got a smart kettle a few weeks ago when they were on special at Super Cheap Auto. Not sure if some NZ stores however still have it in stock as it has been removed online, but it is on clearance in Oz for $20 https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/germanica-digital-wi-fi-kettle-1.7l-gemanica/624646.html . I didn't pay much more than this, so even as a non smart kettle , it was cheap., especially as it is stainless steel inside. It works quite well and has an app which works with quite a few features.

If you really want the coffee ready when you walk into the kitchen why not just get an old school drip-drip type filter coffee machine and attach that to the aforementioned $25 smart plug?

I'd probably keep forgetting to change the filter paper and coffee grounds before bedtime, so no good for me.

You can set it to heat at a lower temperature for some drinks. You can also turn it on when you are at your desk or still in bed, and then when boiled you can make your drink straight away. Plus it can be set to keep the kettle hot. It is a bit of a gimmick though but is handy however to see the temperature, so you know if you need to reboil it or not.

Good heads up.

As for a catheter - I mean I want to eke out as much sleep as possible - but not quite at that expense.

Yes, I have had a couple, and would be reluctant to be without one. It doesn't get used a lot at <100c but sometimes it's quite useful.

All of my simple kettles are ok with being powered off and the switch staying on. Not like the nespresso machines which all power up to be off when you give them AC.

Kettles its a magnetic thing that will hold when its on the base, when I lift it off the base it will switch off which not all of them have. That is a safety feature for when you pour it before its decided to turn off.

I expect there is a retail industry term for maintaining a list of items in their webcatalogue, and SCA are pretty shit at it (and are not alone in that).

Mine will do it too. but has a safety circuit in it to stop it "boiling" with no water in it.

Are things like this available in NZ? I used one in Japan for many years, and they're wonderful. Hot water always available at the temperature you want, without having to faff about with apps or timers.

An alternative approach - 2 minutes in an 1100w microwave gets a mug of water to close to boiling. Faster and more energy efficient than boiling a kettle.

For tea, I add the tea bag before microwaving so when it's hot, it's already brewed.

To get you back on topic:

We have the smart ape kettle and love it! I have a google routine set to play alarm, turn on lights and Kettle every morning and it definitely makes life easier. you just have to make sure there is enough water in it every night before you go to bed :)

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

I have a google automation to boil a few mins before I get up so there is no waiting, easy to ask google to boil the kettle, only down side is having to make sure there is enough water
