I'm in Auckland and with Genesis, and it looks like I'm on a low gas user plan.

I'm paying $1.31 a day fixed, plus 10.65c per unit.

SomeoneSomewhere: Previous suggestions about e.g. electricity being 'too cheap to meter' have aged poorly, but with unlimited broadband plans now being the norm, internet connections have achieved that.

As electricity prices have increased a lot, and could increase significantly in the future, one would expect that a lot of that money would be going back into both maintaining and creating new capacity for the increasing population. But hat hasn't happened for things like water pipes, roading etc, even though all are generating more revenue overtime. It seems that spot charges etc for and higher peak time charges is more about reducing demand, rater than using that money to increase capacity. When you also have shareholders that own big parts of these power companies, they expect good returns, which means less money going back into the company.

The Government is the majority shareholder in 3 of the largest 4 power companies- as a 51% shareholder it controls the Boards and can set the dividend and reinvestment policy....

They are but a significant amount of the profits are now paid out to shareholders, rather than reinvested back into the company, or going back into the government coffers for other services

And back in the Day, the Government controller national power prices, meaning that the Electricity department was unable to invest in new generation because it wasn't overly profitable,

Just because its a corporate model vs pure public service department doesn't mean that its worse/better

I just had a look at their pricing and for low-user they quoted me $1.5033 a day and $0.1221 / kWh, for standard-user it's $1.6463 a day and $0.1090 / kWh.

Is your pricing excluding GST?

Their list of Special Fees looks quite scary.

Yes, my numbers there were excluding GST.

I had something in my gas connection fail recently (not the smart meter, some sort of valve), and it was replaced free.

Genesis upgraded ours to a smart meter last week and the installer found a gas leak which was proven to be in pipe work after the gas meter location area somewhere in the home. Gas fitter came around, spent 4.5 hours and bit of gib wall removed later, found the leak which had been happening for 3.5 years since the house was built. I emailed builder with the evidence that there nail/screw had protuded the gas pipe when they installed the batten and they thankfully without any pain at all happily agreed to pay gas fitters invoice and will repair all GIB destroyed in garage, plaster and repaint.

I am glad that we got a smart meter as we would have never known otherwise about the leak.
