I'm sure there are a few strictly protected animal species in your area that are not possums and can get trapped.

Morepork, fantail, keruru, tui, kaka, etc.

But if you don't trap the pests (in urban areas primarily rats and possums), there won't be any birds, because they simply won't survive long enough to leave the nest.

Trapping roaming cats would be helpful for native species too, but is socially frowned upon.

Our cat has brought in zero birds in the last 12 months but maybe half a dozen rats, so is a net benefit to birds.

Everything you mention is true, we also have plenty of neozoa. From the raccoon dog to the American mink, the Chinese mitten crab, which invades our rivers right up to the source and robs the fish clutches. I just wanted to say that you have to make sure you catch the right culprits. As a hunter (and conservationist, which we are obliged to do), I am very aware of the connections, but we are (sometimes unfortunately) bound by the laws of dreamers, even if this is completely insane from a logical point of view. Recently, crows have become songbirds here, the wolf causes a lot of damage but is strictly protected. Someone is dreaming of the restoration of the primeval landscape although we have undoubtedly been living in a cultivated landscape for decades. Stray cats may (and must by law) be shot if they are more than 300 metres away from a settlement. The same applies to dogs that stray more than 100 metres off the leash beyond the control of their owners, are not hunting dogs and pursue game during the closed season. The law requires you to act and society will lynch you for it. What death do you want to die? If you want to have „fun,“ go for it (the law).

How many times do you think I've heard that? That's what 100% of cat owners will tell you, that THEIR cats don't do that, even if you present them with clear proof photos (I shoot them with the camera through the scope and not really in the hope that they will see reason - in vain).

OK so you know what's going on in my back yard better than I do... good to know.

I couldn't care less about your backyard, but I can see and prove what happens 300 metres outside of towns and villages, yet there is exactly the same childish, snotty reaction as yours, which you could have easily gathered from my previous post.

"I couldn't care less about your backyard" - yet you saw fit to comment on exactly that.

"but I can see and prove what happens 300 metres outside of towns and villages" - which has zero relevance to the thread you replied to.

For one who lives on the other side of the world, you might consider moderating the tone of your comments on subjects specific to New Zealand. I know you might have some language issues so recommend you tone yourself down. I'm not sure if you realise you are not presenting yourself in a very positive light here. In fact I think you are slipping well into the wrong side of Wheaton's law.

Let's get back to commenting on the trail camera thread please.

Hi all,

Sometimes we hear a noise on our metal roof, and suspect it is a possum. There's a large tree that touches the roof so they/it could be living up there. I'd like to find out and figure a trail camera could help. Anyone have any recommendation or advice?

sorry i forgot to mention, just grab a good torch and have a look. if its a possum it won't have moved far. if its living in the tree they will be out just after dark. otherwise possums have a fairly distinctive sound when walking on roofs and odds are they generally be a similar time of night.

Yes the one at our last house lived in the phoenix palm and you could set your watch by his appearance after dusk.

All well and good, but the fact that cat owners in New Zealand of all places are supposed to be more sensible than German cat owners contradicts all experience and natural behaviour. If your cat is not behaviourally disturbed and puts mice on the mat, then it will also bring songbirds. I hear the oops - you can tell me what you want on the other side of the world.

This may not fit in with the possum thread, but the cat that only hunts mice was, after all, you who brought it into play. And if you don't understand my undertone, I can translate it clearly: someone who is out in the field and not just at the keyboard has heard too many fairy tales and self-made rules from irresponsible dog and cat owners to be impressed by them. Hence my comment.
