I saw this job post. My guess is the pay's not great. Los Angeles is expensive, but cheaper than Auckland. Could be fun for someone looking to experience the US.

"Team Administrator (Finance)

The New Zealand Consulate-General in Los Angeles is seeking to recruit a Team Administrator (Finance) to provide general administration support with a particular emphasis on financial reporting and analysis activities to help ensure the efficient and smooth running of the post.

This is a locally engaged position based in Los Angeles. Applicants should be a New Zealand National or Dual NZ/US citizen and must be able to obtain and maintain a New Zealand Government “Confidential” security clearance. The Consulate-General does not provide assistance with airfares or accommodation.

...

The successful applicant will be employed on local terms and conditions and must have the right to work in the United States. The Consulate-General will assist with applying for the appropriate work visa if the applicant does not already have work authorisation for the USA.

Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a Confidential New Zealand Government security clearance."

By the way, it's in Santa Monica which is a nice suburb; no drive-by shootings!

Public transportation does exist in Los Angles, contrary to popular belief.

There's actually a light train station near the consulate.

I wonder how do the recent changes to the working visa laws affect this. I thought Trump's govt stopped the expedited processing of the working visas?

http://www.workpermit.com/news/trump-us-visa-h1b-and-l1-visa-executive-order-leaked-and-visa-review-20170324

"A draft executive order leaked in February by a number of news websites, has sparked rumors that Donald Trump plans to sign a new executive order aimed at ‘strangling’ work-visa programmes. It’s understood that H1B and L1 visas, mainly used by Indian IT professionals, may face tighter restrictions as part of wider US immigration reforms."
